With a market share of 56 per cent in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) space, SAP India is now eyeing the untapped very small and medium business (VSMB) segment with the launch of its SAP Business One ERP package in the third week of January.

About the new solution, Srinivas Rao, director (SMB Business), SAP India, said, "We are now targetting companies with revenues of Rs 5-50 crore with SAP Business One, which will be priced below Rs 10 lakh. There are 20,000 companies that fit into this bracket as per our survey done in 2004. By 2008, this segment will have a business potential of Rs 700 crore."

Terming this launch as the "second level launch," Rao said, "ERP was introduced in 1996 in the country with Tier -I and advanced technology companies adopting it."

"Three years ago, we launched mySap All-in-One business solution targetted at SMBs with revenues of Rs 50-400 crore. With the proposed launch of SAP Business One, we are going to completely customise our solution for local needs."

Noting that the VSMB segment has been catered to by small and home grown software houses, Rao said, "This market has remained untapped by large ERP players and this gives us immense opportunity."

With the enterprise application market in the country growing at 10-15 per cent as per an IDC report, SAP with a client base of 800 customers, of which 380 are SMBs, is optimistic about growing at a minimum of 2.5 -3 times the market rate.

Rao said, "We have been growing at the rate of 100 per cent for the last two years, and targeting a 2.5-3 times faster growth than the market."

Sharing his plans for penetrating the VSMB market through channel partners, Rao said, "SAP Business One sale would be driven through our channel partners, who would be provided with training and market infrastructure by us."

The company is in talks with IBM, H-P and other hardware vendors for using their channel partners. He said, "By June, we will have a minimum of 50 channel partners covering the top 50 cities in the country."
