Satyam Computer Services Ltd and The Petrotechnical Open Standards Consortium (POSC) have announced the formation of a strategic alliance that will deliver a robust data exchange system for members of the consortium based in the Asia-Pacific region.

The goal of this effort is to assist in the development and adoption of POSC standards, a press release said.

POSC is a global IT standards consortium in the energy sector and provides forums for companies in the oil and gas industry to collaborate in a non-competitive setting. Satyam has been a member of the consortium since 2002.

Under the agreement, Satyam will provide an ongoing presence in the Asia-Pacific region to establish POSC communities, gather local requirements for information standards, provide technical member support for POSC standards and help strengthen the ties between local oil and gas organisations and the international POSC membership.

Since POSC's inception in 1990, membership participation has grown to over 70 companies. POSC's worldwide membership represents oil companies, suppliers of petroleum exploration and production software and services, government agencies, computing and consulting companies, and research and academic institutions.

The consortium is focused on the use of service oriented architectures (SOA), particularly the use of XML web services, for the exchange of key energy data including real time drilling and production information.
