Fifth generation telecom networks (or 5G) hit some countries early last year and will continue to expand worldwide. Beyond improving speed, 5G is expected to unleash an IoT (Internet of Things) ecosystem where networks can serve communication needs for billions of connected devices, with the right trade-offs between speed, latency, and cost.

India has been a late convert in telecom technology. It got 3G over a decade after it became ubiquitous in the US and Europe, and 4G five years after its global launch.

Now there is a chance of a simultaneous rollout with the rest of the world. Reports suggest that the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) plans to start authorising 5G trials in India this month. Spectrum auctions will happen six months after the trials.
