Are you a bathroom singer and nursing ambitions of becoming a professional? If yes, you now have Shankar Mahadevan to train you. Not the renowned artiste, but the Shankar Mahadevan Academy - an app for Windows 8 - is ready to handhold you through the process.

One can sign up for a 12-week course in Hindustani classical or Carnatic classical, film or devotional music, with courses starting from as low as Rs 1,000. There's also a module designed for children six years and above. Windows 8 app users get a discount of 15 per cent.

Experienced singers can begin at an advanced level, but what we liked were the self-study courses on offer for free. Among which there's one where the playback singer guides you through his rendition of 'Maa' in the film Taare Zameen Par. I had a load of fun trying to master the song, but had to stop midway as my wife threatened to throw me out of the house!

The app is available as a free download for Windows 8. And we'd recommend you run through the free self-study courses first before you pay for the lessons from the academy.
