The Samsung VP-D975Wi is a feasible option for first time users, while the Canon DC-22 is more sophisticated but faces competition from other brands.

When it comes to home video recording evolution, DVD camcorders represent a giant step from analog tape recording to digital quality. The Canon DC 22 camcorder is one such example.

Users can record a video and instantly play it on their DVD players or laptops without having to worry about a computer or converting the content to DVD.

Primarily, the DC 22 features a 10x optical zoom and a 2.2 megapixel charge-couple-device (CCD) image sensor""essentially a chip that determines the brightness of the picture and brilliance of colours. A 2.2 megapixel one, the DC 22 results in a decent video quality and with a battery life lasting at around 90 minutes from a full charge, the camcorder does not disappoint.

There is a 2.7-inch widescreen LCD that allows easy screening of videos/images while shooting. The DC 22 can store up to 60 minutes of video.

The camcorder also includes a built-in electronic lens cover that automatically opens in record mode and closes when switched to playback or turned off. The video quality of a Canon DC 22 is reasonable. But at Rs 39,995, it faces stiff competition from players like Sony and Panasonic.

Samsung VP-D975Wi, another digital camcorder (it records on tape and not a DVD), has been endowed with an optical 26x, a digital 1200x zoom lens and 6.8 cm wide LCD screen.

Samsung has added buttons quite intelligently on this ergonomically designed camcorder, each positioned to make one-hand operation easy. But being a bottom-loading model, making tape changes while shooting on a tripod is virtually impossible.

Samsung has added a button on camcorder body called EasyQ. In this mode, the user forfeits any control over the camera's functionality beyond the zoom and the on/off switch. You forsake any control, allowing the camcorder to dictate all visual decisions.

The user cannot control lower shutter speeds when in EasyQ mode, and it appears the only things within your means are the LED lighting, and Zoom, making this mode incredibly demeaning.

There is external memory added in the form of SD/MMC memory card, but again the digital image stabilizer feature is no good. Result, one ends up with less sharper pictures. Yes, the user can shoot both still and video footage on the Samsung VP-D975 Wi. This is a feasible option for many users.

The Samsung VP-D975Wi is meant for those users seeking a camcorder, which has presets and automatic control options and want only to point and shoot.

Relatively low MRP of Rs 25,490 makes it a potential option for the first time user worried about overcoming their phobia of technology.
