SpikeSource, a US-based firm offering testing, certification and support services for open source software, is setting up its India development centre.

The firm, which has been seeded by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, of which Vinod Khosla is a partner, and Intel Capital is expected to have a team close to 100 over the next 12-14 months. The company is expected to invest close to Rs 10 crore.

A company spokesperson, confirming the developments, said the India centre will play a key role in developing the engineering capabilities of SpikeSource.

It is also learnt that the company is being actively pursued by the VC community for investment. The spokesperson said, "There is always the possibility of a second round of investment at a right valuation."

Besides Kleiner Perkins and Intel, Fidelity Investment and Omidyar Network are the other investors in this firm which received a $12 million funding in a Series A round in May 2005.

According to the company, the past few years have seen the birth of open source alternatives in almost every category of software from infrastructure to desktop applications. IT executives are turning to open source software to lower the total cost of ownership, increase flexibility and escape vendor lock-in.

While the open source community has created a highly successful collaborative development model, most projects lack the support infrastructure to facilitate enterprise use. Companies that try to tackle open source solutions on their own often find they have taken on more than they can handle.

SpikeSource is targetting to fill some of these critical gaps in the open source ecosystem that hinder the further adoption of such software by the business community. By focussing on reliability and interoperability the firm aims to help customers maximise their use of open source software in production environments .

The company will provide integration, configuration, testing, maintenance and technical support of business-ready open source infrastructure software through solution stacks which are tested and certified and ready for use.
