After striking a chord with banks and telecommunication companies, Sun Microsystems is planning an exclusive SME strategy for India.

The strategy would see the company target industrial belts in various parts of the country for its enterprise resource planning (ERP) products.

The company derives majority of its revenues from telecommunications and banking sectors, which contribute 40 per cent while the rest is made up by the government and the SME sector. While the company caters to SMEs in all the countries it operates, considering the tremendous growth possibilities in tier II and tier III cities in the country, it has decided to formulate the strategy for India.

Under the strategy, the company plans to target textile belts in Gujarat and Coimbatore, the auto ancillary belt in Ludhiana among others, the gems and jewellery industry in Surat and similar other industries for its ERP products.

"The SME segment is showing a lot of interest in implementing the latest ERP solutions that help upgrade technology and ensure better quality and efficiency," said Rajesh Rege, director sales, Sun Microsystems, India.

The company expects a growth of 40 per cent in this financial year with revenues from the SME segment alone as compared with the industry growth of 18 per cent.

Along with its focus on SMEs, the company is also looking to partner start-ups for technology.

In the US, the company has taken the lead in an initiative to collaborate with more start-ups and had organised a start-up camp where senior executives had reportedly pitched to dozens of start-up hopefuls.

In India, the company at present has no plans to fund start-ups but is looking at newer technologies being brought out by them.

Sun Microsystems plans to add 18 new offices to its current presence of eight offices in the country at Mumbai, Bangalore, New Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and now Ahmedabad. Operations in Coimbatore, Trichy, Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, Dehra Dun, Guwahati, Goa, Indore, Bhopal, Ranchi, Jammu and Nagpur commenced recently.
