Domestic software services major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is aiming to become one among the top 10 IT companies in the world by year 2010. The Tata group company will take both organic and inorganic route to improve its position from the present fourteenth in the world.

TCS has also earmarked Rs 950 crore as capital expenditure for the current fiscal. Of the total, Rs 350 crore would be used for technological advances and the remaining Rs 600 crore for infrastructure development.

"We are aiming to become one among the top 10 IT majors in the world and work diligently to achieve this end," TCS chief executive officer and managing director S Ramadorai told shareholders at the company's annual general meeting today.

This was the company's first AGM after its initial public offering (IPO) in August 2004. The IPO was biggest in the history of the country and that too by an IT company and TCS had raised over Rs 5,000 crore from the offering.

To grow organically, TCS intends to pursue unexplored opportunities in non-English markets, such as Japan, Eastern Europe, Russia and China. The company would also use its global delivery centers (GDCs) in South America and China to offer multi-lingual service.

"We also intend to leverage our proficiency in new technologies like radio frequency identification (RFID) and embedded systems to create sustained value through R&D growth," he added.

The company would also look aggressively at the domestic market, where there are a lot of opportunities, like its existing projects in financial, e-governance and defense sectors. Wireless security would also be a growth engine for the company.

Another priority is to pursue growth avenues through mergers and acquisitions to complement the existing capabilities. The company would scout for acquisitions both in new geographies and domain space.

Marketing and branding campaigns across the globe would also be taken up to increase the visibility of the company. Ramadorai, however, did not elaborate on this.

Even though, TCS is ranked the 14th in the world, it is the sixth on the basis of net income, ninth on the total number of employees and 14 on revenue basis.
