India’s largest IT firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) might soon ask some more employees from its UK geography to leave.
The company has already retrenched over 100 employees in the UK, a fact confirmed by company CEO & MD S Ramadorai in Kolkata today.
“Although I am not sure why the employees in the UK were asked to leave, two of the reasons could be that their contracts ended, or bad performance. Going forward, a lot of emphasis this year will be on employee efficiency,” he said.
The company has already put 130 more employees under scanner. These recruits are working on its UK-based insurance client Legal and General’s (L&G’s) account.

TCS had signed a five-year agreement with L&G to provide IT managed services from June 2008. Under this agreement, TCS was to provide application, development and IT support services from the client’s premises plus TCS’ new delivery centre based within the UK.
“We are committed to treating all employees with respect during this process and hope to be able to absorb as many of them as possible in the UK or outside. Those affected will receive competitive severance terms, plus access to counseling support through the outplacement programme to assist in identifying alternative roles within our organisation or employment elsewhere,” said a TCS spokesperson.
TCS had, in early January, told employees that it will be looking to reorganise the present operations over the coming months to provide support in the most efficient and cost effective way possible by adopting the TCS global service delivery model, which incorporates a mix of onshore and offshore IT support.

“We have already begun a process within this business unit that will allow affected employees with the right skills and flexibility to transfer to other TCS operations either in the UK or abroad”,” said the spokesperson.
Moreover, TCS also said it has identified a number of positions within its UK operations that it is currently looking to fill and hopes that many of these employees will take up new opportunities with TCS.
Overall, TCS has around 5,000 people working at some 50 locations in the UK, with a further 750 plus staff at its site in Peterborough. As the company continues to grow, it has approximately 120 vacancies in the UK at any one time and between 2,000 and 2,500 vacancies worldwide.
