Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has signed a deal in China, and is in the process of bidding for a banking solution project in China.On the domestic front, the company is preparing to go to smaller towns, and proposes to open the first such development centre in Nagpur. S. Ramadorai, CEO and managing director of TCS told, said last weekend that the company has developed an embedded software for mobile phone users to perform banking transactions. "The solution is undergoing pilot trials in South East Asia and will be commercially introduced as soon as regulatory norms are modified to facilitate mobile banking transactions powered by embedded software," Ramadorai said.TCS recently won a contract in China, and is also bidding for a project for a Chinese bank, Ramadorai said without disclosing any names. Sources said the formal announcement of the deal won by the company is expected at the opening of the TCS-Microsoft joint venture in China. "The event is expected within the next two months," the sources said.Ramadorai said the company, while expanding its operations in metros and mini-metros, is also planning to start development centres in smaller towns.The first such centre would start in Nagpur in Maharashtra, he said. "We are looking at tapping IT talent in the smaller towns in India, and will set up development centres in places where there is availability of young graduates of the calibre the company needs," he explained.Ramadorai hinted that TCS may open centres in other small towns like Kochi or Coimbatore. There will also be expansion at the existing centres like Hyderabad, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh and Gurgaon.Reacting to a query on the company's domestic business, Ramadorai said about 10% of TCS' revenue (Rs 990 crore) comes from projects in India. "There is a lot of scope to expand the domestic business provided the government drives the initiative to encourage use of information technology," he said.
