The home ministry has cleared the proposal of Telcordia Technologies to implement the mobile number portability (MNP) service in India. The US-based company had been given a licence by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for the service. Telcordia’s operations came under scrutiny after the home ministry objected to the company’s presence in Pakistan. The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) had also raised questions regarding the company’s plans for India earlier.

In its last meeting with the FIPB, the home ministry cleared the company’s MNP proposal in the country. However, in a communication to the finance ministry, the home ministry also set some riders that mandated Telcordia USA to furnish credible information about its exact role in Pakistan.

MNP Interconnection Telecom Solutions India Pvt Ltd – a joint venture between Telcordia and India’s Deepak Talwar Consultants Pvt Ltd – is one of only two companies that have been licensed to implement MNP. The CEO and CFO shall be Indians, the communication had mandated.
