The Chennai-based Teledata Informatics has forayed into the Chinese shipping market with its marine software product. The company has bagged a $1million (approximately Rs 4.3 crore) order from the China-based Sinotrans Shipping for installing its software in its 34 vessels and onshore offices.

K Padmanabhan, director, said: "We are executing this order in six months. This will help to further our expansion in China."

The company has already opened an office in Shanghai and is planning to release a Mandarin version of the software for the benefit of other Chinese shipping players.

According to Padmanabhan, there are 76,000 ships worldwide with only 11, 000 being equipped with a marine software. China has 3,800 ships, while India has around 600.

Teledata is one of the few players in the world which has an early mover advantage in most markets. It is the only Asian company at CMM Level 3 providing ERP solutions for marine, utilities and education sectors. The company recently bagged a $12 million (Rs 52 crore) from Bunge SA that has plans to expand into India.

In the current financial year, Teledata has acquired four companies in the US, Singapore and Dubai to service its global clients that include ABN Amro, AT & T, Dow Jones & Co and Pfizer.
