The Brahamputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) at Lepetkata near Dibrugarh, Assam is expected to give a huge boost to the downstream industries such as plastics in North-East Region. Having a capacity to produce 3 lakh tonnes of polymers per annum, BCPL was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also commissioned the wax plant of Numaligarh Refineries Limited, on February 5, 2016.
“BCPL plant will attract huge investments in of setting up of downstream industries. The initiative of the Government of India will provide an enabling ecosystem for setting up new plastics industry in Assam,” said Ananth Kumar, Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizer.
Ananth Kumar informed that the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL) plant will be revived in the next 3 years and, it will produce 8 lakh metric tonnes of urea, fulfilling the requirements of the North-East Region. To meet the human resource requirements for the polymer industries, Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET) has increased the capacity of its Guwahati center to 5 thousand per annum. In addition, the government has decided to set up a National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) campus at Guwahati in the next 3 years.
