There was an explosion on April 20, 2016 in the VCM-ethylene plant of Mexichem in the Clorados III area inside the Petrochemical Pajaritos Complex in Mexico. The plant is owned by Petroquimica Mexicana de Vinilo (PMV) and is operated by Mexichem in partnership with Pemex.
Mexichem confirmed that 13 people have been died and 88 others remain injured, of which 13 are in critical condition.
After the explosion happened, security protocols were immediately activated, with all pipelines and valves being shut off and the plant being fully evacuated and shut down.
Mexichem said that once the facility is cool down, expert teams will enter to verify security conditions as well as to assess the damage. Experts will also begin their investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
As of now air monitoring has determined that there were no harmful chemicals released into the air that would pose a health risk, said the company.
