Bharat Forge opens facility for manufacturing locomotive components at Baramati

The new facility will exclusively focus on developing critical and sophisticated components and products for the Railway sector globally

Bharat Forge has opened a high tech locomotive component manufacturing facility at ‘Bharat Forge centre for advanced manufacturing’ in Baramati, Maharashtra. Minister of state for railways Manoj Sinha inaugurated the facility on February 14, 2015 in presence of Pralhad Joshi, MP and Chairman - Standing Committee on Petroleum & Natural Gas. 

The Railways business segment is an integral part of Bharat Forge’s plan to grow with India’s infrastructure development and is the cornerstone of its diversification strategy. The company has been supplying to all major railways networks across the world including in the US, Europe, Russia and recently to the Indian Railways.

The new facility will exclusively focus on developing critical and sophisticated components and products for the Railway sector globally. “This facility will not only give Bharat Forge a new growth avenue but also enable us in contributing to building India’s economic backbone, strengthen national manufacturing capabilities and steer the government’s ‘Make in India’ drive,” said Bharat Forge in a press release.

Bharat Forge supplies critical and high performance components such as crankshafts, connecting-rods, portal axles, etc for locomotive applications globally. Currently, Bharat Forge is the only crankshaft manufacturer in India for the industrial sector. The company aims to leverage on its rich repository of metallurgical knowledge, design & engineering capability and manufacturing prowess to significantly contribute to the governments thrust on imports-substitution and modernisation of the Indian Railways. 

Baba Kalyani, chairman & managing director, Bharat Forge, said, “Bharat Forge is the first Indian supplier of locomotive crankshafts to the Indian Railways. All the components for the Railway sector have been indigenously developed in-house ‘first time right’ leveraging our R&D capabilities and process innovation. We are also developing new products with the objective to enhance system and fuel efficiency.” 

Manoj Sinha said, “Under our government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, we are committed to encourage indigenous manufacturing of railway components and products which have hitherto been imported from outside. I am immensely pleased to see Bharat Forge positively responding to Prime Minister's ‘Make in India’ drive.”
