Microfinance refers to provision of small or micro sized loans and other basic financial services to low-income individuals or households. Bandhan started as a society that stood for financial inclusion and women empowerment through sustainable livelihood creation, along with launch of microfinance operations in rural Bengal. Thereon it acquired a NBFC and established Bandhan Financial Services Private Limited, with continued focus on financial inclusion. Further, microfinance portfolio was transferred from society to NBFC. It became the largest microfinance institution (MFI) in the country.
Finally, it started operations as a Universal Bank on August 23, 2015, with 2,523 banking outlets, after becoming India’s first microfinance institution to get a universal banking license. Their extensive capacity to span the country to reach people who need financial support, is not only impressive but also heartening.
