India thrashed England by 68 runs in the second semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 at the Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana on June 27 as they marched into the final with a thumping win. The Men in Blue will be up against South Africa who had earlier thumped Afghanistan by 90 wickets in the first semi-final.
It was a re-match of the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final in Adelaide where India was humiliated by 10 wickets. This time around, Rohit Sharma's men were eyeing a payback and they delivered in style. Chasing 172 to win, the English batters just couldn't cope with the spin bowling of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav.
From 26/0 in 3 overs, it became 49/5 in 8.1 overs. Harry Brook tried to counterattack but failed as Kuldeep cleaned him up. Livingstone was run-out and it was thanks to some lusty blows from Archer in the end that the English managed to put on 103 on the board.
England skipper Jos Buttler had won the toss and decided to bowl first against India. It was thought to be a good decision in overcast conditions, but the pitch, devoid of any grass whatsoever baked nicely under the sun post the rain and helped the Indian side both while batting and in bowling.
India had posted 171/7 on the board thanks to skipper Rohit Sharma's fifty (57) and useful contributions from Suryakumar Yadav (49) and Hardik Pandya (23).
Both the teams remained unchanged from their last games in the Super 8 stage which means that Mark Wood sits out and Chris Jordan retains his place in the English playing 11.
The match started one hour and 15 minutes later than the scheduled time due to rain interruption. An extended time of 250 minutes was given to complete it. In the end, not a lot of it was required.
