Punjab Kings’ diminishing Powerplay returns

PBKS’ aggressive Powerplay approach was one of their key positives in the first season of this IPL cycle - they scored at 9.20 in Overs 1-6 in 2022, the highest scoring rate in the competition.

This season however they’ve dropped down to 7.61 runs per over, the slowest among the 10 sides in the competition.

Their poor returns have been particularly prevalent in recent games at Mullanpur, with scores of 27-3 against Sunrisers Hyderabad and 40-4 against Mumbai Indians and a switch in the order, dropping Bairstow for Rossouw and opening with Sam Curran, didn’t seem to be the answer during that fixture.

Will GT reinforce pace attack on fast Mullanpur Pitch?

Mullanpur has been one of the most pace friendly venues in IPL 2024 with the fast bowlers averaging 22 with the ball and taking 47 out of 56 wickets taken total. On the contrary, spinners have been less effective at the venue, averaging well over 30.

It will be interesting how Gujarat Titans form their bowling attack for this fixture - they have rotated between Spencer Johnson, Noor Ahmad and Azmatullah Omarzai as overseas quicks in addition to Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma. To take advantage of the conditions, especially in the Powerplay, they could consider playing Johnson in addition to either Omarzai or Josh Little.

Punjab Kings lost five encounters in last over thrillers

PBKS are struggling in the ninth place following a nine-run loss to Mumbai Indians away on Thursday night, the margin of defeat made respectable by an incredible rearguard act by the in-form young duo of Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh after the team was tottering at 14/4 in a chase of 193.

Five losses and two wins in seven outings hardly inspire confidence and irrespective of the fact that their upcoming opponents are also struggling to get their act right, PBKS will have their task cut out in front of their fans, who had little to cheer about so far this season at the newly-inaugurated home venue.

The absence of their influential skipper Shikhar Dhawan in the last few matches has hit PBKS hard and doubts remain over the southpaw's availability for Sunday's fixture.
