President Droupadi Murmu dissolved the 17th Lok Sabha on Wednesday on the advice of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet, according to the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Cabinet, in its meeting held on Wednesday, advised the President to dissolve the current Lok Sabha with immediate effect, it said. "The President has accepted the advice of the Cabinet on 05.06.2024 and signed the Order dissolving the 17th Lok Sabha in exercise of the powers conferred upon her by Sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 85 of the Constitution," a communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan read. The term of the current Lok Sabha was to end on June 16.
Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav today morning coincidentally flew to Delhi on the same flight to attend key meetings as the NDA and the Opposition INDIA bloc plan their next moves. “Have some patience, wait and watch,” Yadav replied on being asked about INDIA bloc's attempts to form government at the Centre.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu along with his Council of Ministers. Narendra Modi will likely be sworn-in as the prime minister for a third consecutive term on June 8 as the NDA scraped past the 292 seats needed to form the government, India Today reported citing sources. Modi will be the second leader to become the PM for a third term after Jawaharlal Nehru.
After it emerged that the BJP would not able to meet its target of securing 370 Lok Sabha seats by itself, the party’s leaders opened discussions with the leaders of its allies on government formation. The NDA won a total of 292 seats, with the result on one seat still pending. The party suffered because of a tepid performance in the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh as an energised INDIA bloc rose from the ashes with a tally of 233 seats. The Congress secured wins in 99 seats, a significant rise from 52 seats in the 2019 Lok sabha polls. Others, including regional parties and Independents, bagged a total of 17 seats.
The BJP and allies bagged 17 seats in the General Elections 2024 in Maharashtra, with the BJP's numbers falling by less than half compared to 2019, whereas the Maha Vikas Aghadi of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) secured 30 of the 48 seats.The saffron party secured nine seats, a significant fall from the 23 it bagged in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in the Maharashtra. Its ally Shiv Sena secured seven seats. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP managed a solitary seat, but his wife Sunetra Pawar was trounced in Baramati from Supriya Sule, daughter of Sharad Pawar.
