Uma Bharti and Swami Chinmayanand were the Bharatiya Janata Party’s first saffron-robed inductions into offices of power. Uma Bharti became the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh in 2003. Chinmayanand, a Lok Sabha member from UP’s Jaunpur, was a junior home minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

Neither had an illustrious inning by the reckoning of insiders. Bharti used the huge mandate she got to pursue a pet issue, cow protection. Chinmayanand was overshadowed by his senior, L K Advani.

How will Yogi Adityanath, the latest entrant in saffron raiment to the inner recesses of power, allow himself to be judged? Going by the tumultuous week he has spent as CM in Lucknow’s Sachivalaya, the party’s core supporters are convinced his steps are right, no matter what the ramifications are, whether he was shutting down “illegal” abattoirs or rounding up “eve teasers”.

BJP insiders conceptualise a governance template in which Adityanath will tend to the “ideologically slanted” issues, including law and order and probity. While the macro and micro demands of ‘development’ will be looked at and executed by the Centre and party president Amit Shah.

Shah has packed the Yogi’s team with his chosen men, who’ve worked and been closely associated with him in his central team of functionaries or in UP. They are the two deputy CMs, Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma, Swami Prasad Maurya, SP Singh Baghel, Srikant Sharma, Siddarth Nath Singh and Mahendra Singh. Srikant and Siddharth have got the key portfolios of energy and health, respectively; Mahendra Singh has been given rural development.

PM Narendra Modi has counselled the state MPs to stay away from administrative and police transfers and postings, a lucrative industry. The understanding is that the Centre would have its way in restructuring the bureaucracy, critical to implement the party’s agenda. Apparently, one of the few officers Adityanath was keen on drafting in the CM’s secretariat was Awanish Awasthi, who was Gorakhpur district magistrate and a Yogi favourite. He is the husband of popular folk singer, Malini Awasthi, awarded the Padma Shri in 2016.
