Rupala lays foundation stone for Rs 109 crore Paradip Fishing Harbour facility

Union ministers Parshottam Rupala and Sarbanand Sonowal on Monday jointly laid the foundation stone of a project to modernise and upgrade the Paradip Fishing Harbour in Paradip, Odisha. This Fishing Harbour Project will be implemented by Paradip Port Authority with a completion period of 18 months, said Rupala who is the the fisheries minister.

On the row over Maldives MP's post on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Former Maldives Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi says, "I would think as close friends, as neighbours, as part of the global community, and we would keep our international commitments and Maldives government, would keep our traditional foreign policy of being friends with everyone. We've always had an India first policy, and I hope they continue it, that they recognize that you're the closest neighbour, that you will be the people who have always come and will come in the future also when the need arises and to have the sentiments of the Maldivian people because we have always gone to India for medical treatment as well. When we do not have the facility to attend to certain illnesses in Maldives. Even otherwise when we had the Covid, we got the vaccines also under Indian aid. We've had so much cooperation between the two countries. We have cooperated with each other from time immemorial, and it is not feasible for us to even think that we can replace our closest neighbour..."

Apple's Vision Pro augmented-reality headset will go on sale from Feb 2

Apple announced that its Vision Pro device is set to be released in the United States on February 2. This launch comes several months after its introduction, as Apple aims to enter the augmented-reality (AR) headset market, which is currently dominated by Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook. The Vision Pro represents Apple's substantial investment in the AR space and is its most expensive product since the debut of the iPhone over a decade ago. Priced at $3,499, the AR headset is more than three times the cost of the most expensive headset in Meta's lineup of mixed and virtual reality devices.

Rs 1,000 cr approved for Nashik district planning committee for 2024-25

The Maharashtra government has given its approval for a budget of Rs 1,002 crore for the District Planning Committee of Nashik for the fiscal year 2024-25. The draft plan comprises Rs 609 crore for the general district annual plan, Rs 293 crore for the tribal sub-scheme, and Rs 100 crore for the Scheduled Caste sub-scheme.

Delhi Minister Rai orders immediate release of outstanding payments after smog tower at Connaught Place shut

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Monday wrote to the Principal Secretary of Environment, directing the latter to release the outstanding payments of the personnel working at the Smog Tower located in Delhi's Connaught Place. The smog tower, inaugurated by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in 2021, has stopped working after the personnel responsible for its operations 'locked it' due to non-payment of their salary for December 2023 and no written 'job guarantee' from the Delhi government.

India-Maldives diplomatic row: Traders to refrain from dealing with island nation, asks CIAT

Amid the India-Maldives diplomatic row, traders' body CAIT on Monday called upon domestic traders and exporters to refrain from conducting business dealings with the island nation. Show cause notice issued to former TMC MP Mahua Moitra for not vacating govt bungalow

Former TMC Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra was issued a notice on Monday by the Directorate of Estates (DoE) for not vacating her government bungalow, a source in the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry said. The Trinamool Congress leader, who was expelled from Lok Sabha on December 8 last year, was earlier asked to vacate the house by January 7 after her allotment was cancelled. The DoE has now asked her to submit her reply to the notice within three days.

Delhi High Court grants time to govt to respond to PIL on deepfakes

The Delhi High Court today stated that the matter raising concerns over deepfakes has a bigger dimension and granted time to the central government to place its response to a public interest litigation (PIL) on the issue. A bench led by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet P S Arora said the Centre should be given the time to first apply its mind on the issue as it has a large dimension.

Sony Group is planning to call off the merger pact of its India unit with Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, Bloomberg reported today citing sources. The conglomerate is looking to cancel the merger pact because of a standoff over whether Zee’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Punit Goenka, also its founder’s son, would lead the merged enterprise. 

In another development, the Supreme Court today overturned Gujarat government's decision to grant remission to 11 convicts involved in rape of Bilkis Bano and the murder of her family. The Supreme Court  begun pronouncing its verdict on the pleas challenging the premature release of life convicts in the Bilkis Bano case at 10:30 am today. The eleven convicts were sentenced to life for multiple murders and rapes during the 2002 Gujarat riots. A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan will pronounce the judgment. Bilkis Bano herself has filed a petition challenging the remission granted to convicts. Apart from her petition, there is a set of PILs challenging the Gujarat government's decision.
