DVC followed all norms before releasing water from dams: Govt

The central government on Thursday said that all norms were followed while releasing water from the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), denying accusations by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that the water discharge was responsible for flooding in the state.
 
Earlier in the day, Banerjee said that flooding in parts of Bengal was on account of the "water released by central government organisation DVC from its dams".
 
"This is a man-made flood, and it's unfortunate," she said.
 
Responding to the accusations, the Union power ministry in a statement said that all authorities concerned were informed regarding the scheduled release of water from the dams.

Israel's defense minister has declared the start of a “new phase” of the war as Israel turns its focus toward the northern front against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.
Two waves of explosive attacks hit Syria and Lebanon: an apparent Israeli attack targeting pagers used by Hezbollah that killed at least 12 and wounded nearly 3,000 on Tuesday, and exploding walkie-talkies and other electronics Wednesday across Lebanon that killed at least 20 people and injured 450 others.
“We are at the start of a new phase in the war — it requires courage, determination and perseverance,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told troops on Wednesday.

Labour ministry probing 'exploitative work environment' following EY employee death

The Ministry of Labour & Employment is investigating alleged "unsafe and exploitative work environment" days after the tragic demise of Anna Sebastian Perayil who worked with S R Batliboi, a member firm of EY Global. Perayil was a 26-year-old chartered accountant (CA) who died allegedly due to extreme work pressure at the firm. "Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Anna Sebastian Perayil. A thorough investigation into the allegations of an unsafe and exploitative work environment is underway. We are committed to ensuring justice & LabourMinistry has officially taken up the complaint," Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje Thursday said on X.

Absence of dedicated parking spaces in residential colonies is a civic issue which requires a policy-based response from municipal authorities rather than judicial intervention in individual disputes, the Delhi High Court has said. The high court's observation came as it refused to interfere with a plea in which a petitioner claimed that parking of vehicles in front of his house and shop was unlawful. The high court said the problem raised by the petitioner about the parking of vehicles in narrow residential lanes reflected a common predicament faced by many urban residents in Delhi.

AAP MLA Mukesh Ahlawat will be the new face in the Delhi Cabinet headed by Atishi, who will be sworn in as chief minister on September 21, and four ministers will be retained, the party said on Thursday. Karnataka HC reserves verdict on Prajwal Revanna's bail plea in sexual assault case

The Karnataka High Court on Thursday reserved its verdict on the bail plea of former Janata Dal (S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who faces allegations of sexual assault and rape. A single-judge bench of Justice M Nagaprasanna earlier heard arguments on Revanna's application in the first case and two anticipatory bail pleas related to subsequent complaints. During the hearing, the court directed the advocates to avoid mentioning the victims' names and, instead, point out specific details in the case documents.

Defamation case against Rahul Gandhi: Hearing postponed to Sept 21

The hearing in the MP-MLA court here in a case of defamation against Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was on Thursday postponed due to unavailability of the complainant's lawyer. Speeding SUV crashes into guardrail near Rajghat, 5 college students injured

Five college students were injured when their speeding SUV crashed into a guardrail that pierced through the middle of the vehicle near Rajghat in north Delhi early Thursday, police said. The Hyundai Venue car had five occupants, four of them students of Delhi University colleges, who were returning from a birthday party at a pub in neighbouring Gurugram. They have been hospitalised, police said.

 A US court has summoned the Indian government after Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun filed a civil lawsuit, alleging a plot to murder him. 

India refrained from voting in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday, as the 193-member body passed a resolution demanding that Israel end its unlawful presence in the occupied Palestinian territories within 12 months, according to a report from news agency PTI. Those opposing the resolution included Israel and the United States.  Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Nepal, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom were among the other nations which abstained from voting. The resolution received 124 votes in favour, 14 against, and 43 abstentions.

China will certainly be "high on the agenda" at the Quad Summit set to be hosted by US President Joe Biden in Delaware's Wilmington on September 21, US National Security Council (NSC) Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby on Wednesday (local time). When asked to what extent China will be a focus of the Quad Summit, Kirby stated, "I think it'll certainly be high on the agenda. I mean, there's not an opportunity when you get together with these particular leaders, the Indo-Pacific, Quad, where you in fact it would be irresponsible if they didn't talk about the challenges that still exist in the region caused by aggressive PRC military action for instance, unfair trade practices, tensions over the Taiwan Strait. I have no doubt that that all those issues will come up."

The second round of talks between agitating junior doctors and the West Bengal government on Wednesday remained "inconclusive" as the medics expressed their dissatisfaction with the outcome of the meeting and announced that they would continue their agitation and 'cease work'.
