Petrol sales up 4%, diesel 1% in June
Petrol consumption increased 4.2 per cent year-on-year in June while diesel sales expanded 0.7 per cent, according to provisional sales data published by the petroleum and natural gas ministry. Sales of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) increased 8.7 per cent and 5.1 per cent respectively in June.

German inflation eases to 2.5% in June
German inflation eased to 2.5 per cent in June, preliminary data from the federal statistics office showed on Monday.
Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast a reading of 2.6 pe cent, after a year-on-year increase in consumer prices of 2.8 per cent in May, based on data harmonised to compare with other European Union countries.

A Delhi court on Monday sentenced activist Medha Patkar to five months in jail in a defamation case filed against her by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena in 2001. The judge said that excessive punishment of one year or two years is not being given, taking into consideration Patkar's age and health condition.
The country's justice system will see three new criminal laws -- Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam -- come into effect today. These laws are set to replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively. Judgments are now required to be pronounced within 45 days of completion of trial and charges framed within 60 days of first hearing. Two women died and 11 people were injured after being buried under the debris of an overhead water tank that collapsed in a densely populated area of Mathura district on Sunday, officials said. One of the injured, identified as Nawab (35), has been sent to SN Medical College and Hospital in Agra as his condition was serious, they said. The incident took place at around 6 pm in Krishna Vihar Colony developed by the Uttar Pradesh Awas Vikas Parishad.
