Twelve newborns and as many adults died at a state-run hospital in Maharashtra's Nanded in the last 24 hours, the hospital dean said, blaming a shortage of medicines and hospital staff, reported NDTV. Of 24 deaths in the last 24 hours, 12 adults died due to "various ailments, mostly snake bites", the dean of Nanded's Shankarrao Chavan Government Hospital said.
"Six males and six female babies died in the last 24 hours. Twelve adults also died due to various ailments, mostly snake bites. We faced some difficulty since various staff were being transferred," he said.
An Earthquake of Magnitude 5.2 shook Meghalaya and nearby states on Monday evening, the National Centre for Seismology said. There was no immediate report of any loss of life or damage to property. The tremor occurred at 6.15 pm in North Garo Hills district in the northeastern state at a depth of 10 km. The epicentre is around 3 km from Resubelpara, the district headquarters.
The jolt was also felt in nearby states such as Assam and the northern part of West Bengal and Sikkim. "We have not received any report of loss of life or damage to property," said an official of the disaster management authority here. The northeastern states fall in the high seismic zone, and earthquakes frequently hit the region.

EU antitrust regulators have not opened a formal investigation into chips used for artificial intelligence, the European Commission said on Monday, days after the French competition authority raided Nvidia for alleged anti-competitive practices. "There is no formal investigation by the Commission into the matter you refer to," a spokesperson for the EU executive said in an email to Reuters when asked about the issue. Nvidia had declined to comment following the French raid. Bloomberg News last week said the EU antitrust watchdog was informally collecting views on potentially abusive practices in the market for graphics process units.
The Bihar government released a caste-based survey report on Monday, ahead of the Lok Sabha election in 2024. According to the survey, extremely backward caste (EBC) comprises 36.01% of the population, OBC 27.12% and general category 15.52% of the covered population. Scheduled caste comprises 19.65% and ST 1.68% of population covered under the survey.
