Car crashes into Downing Street gates, 1 arrested: Police

Armed police arrested one man after a car crashed into the gates of the UK prime minister's Downing Street office and residence in central London on Thursday, Scotland Yard said, reported NDTV.
 
"At around 16:20 (1520 GMT) a car collided with the gates of Downing Street on Whitehall. Armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving," police said in a statement.
 
No injuries were reported and police added that enquiries were ongoing.
 
Video footage of the incident showed a white car driving at low speed across Whitehall, where many government ministries are located.
 
It appeared to then mount the footpath and came to a halt after hitting the large metal gates that guard the entrance to Downing Street.
 
Other footage showed a police cordon surrounding the car, with its boot open.

Telugu Desam Party to attend new Parliament building inauguration on May 28

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Thursday said it will take part in the inauguration of the new Parliament building scheduled on May 28 in New Delhi. TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu has instructed Rajya Sabha MP Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar to represent the party during the inauguration of the new Parliament building, a party statement said. On receiving an invitation from the Lok Sabha Secretary General, TDP Chief Chandrababu Naidu asked Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar to represent the party at the grand inauguration of the Parliament building by the Prime Minister Narendar Modi, on May 28, it said.

President Murmu urges tribal women to come forward to reap benefits of govt scheme

President Droupadi Murmu, who is on a three-day visit to Jharkhand, on Thursday urged tribal women to come forward and reap the benefits of government schemes. The President interacted with women members of Self Help Groups in Khunti, the birthplace of tribal icon Birsa Munda.

She also said there is a need to preserve the cultural identity of Scheduled Tribe community.

"Come forward and take the benefits of government schemes which are run for your welfare. Tribal women of Jharkhand are ahead of those in other states when it comes to women empowerment," Murmu said at an event in Khunti.

While 20 Opposition parties are set to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28 (Saturday), several non-BJP parties have decided to attend the event. She, however, said that she won’t be able to attend the ceremony owing to pre-scheduled engagements.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually flagged off the inaugural run of Uttarakhand's first semi-high speed Vande Bharat Express train connecting Dehradun with New Delhi in Dehradun.

AAP leader and former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain was on Thursday admitted to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital here after he collapsed in Tihar Jail due to dizziness, the party said. Jain has been lodged in prison since his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case in May.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced that he will be flagging off the Vande Bharat Express between Delhi and Dehradun at 11 AM today.
 "Uttarakhand’s connectivity is all set to get a big boost. At 11 AM today, I will be flagging off the Vande Bharat Express between Delhi and Dehradun. Making the occasion even more special is the feat of 100% electrification of Uttarakhand’s rail tracks. Do join the programme." PM Modi tweeted.

While addressing the public gathered to welcome him, PM Modi said, "The people here asked me why I gave the vaccines to the world. I want to say that this is the land of Buddha, Gandhi. We care even for our enemies... Today the world wants to know what India is thinking."

"When I talk about the culture of my country, I look into the eyes of the world. This confidence has come because you have formed a government with an absolute majority in the country. Those who have come here are people who love India, not PM Modi," he said.

PM Modi arrived at Palam airport in Delhi after concluding his three-nation visit to Japan, Papua New Guinea and Australia.
