Domestic air passenger traffic grew 5.1 per cent year-on-year to an estimated 138.9 million in May and was significantly higher by around 14 per cent than pre-Covid levels, credit ratings agency Icra said on Thursday. Icra also said the outlook on the Indian aviation industry is stable amid the continued recovery in domestic and international air passenger traffic with a relatively stable cost environment and expectations of the trend continuing in FY2025. The airlines' capacity deployment in the previous month increased 6 per cent year-on-year and about 2 per cent higher than April 2024, it added. According to the agency, the domestic air passenger traffic for FY24 was around 154 million, with a year-on-year growth of around 13 per cent. Canadian discount airline Lynx Air will shut down on Monday and suggested that it could cancel many flights over the weekend too, leaving customers scrambling to make new travel plans. Lynx announced the shutdown late Thursday and told customers to contact their credit-card company about getting a refund for cancelled flights. The Calgary, Alberta, airline said it could not help with refunds. Canada's transport minister, Pablo Rodriguez, said he was following Lynx's announcement that it was filing for restructuring. India's domestic air passenger traffic grew 8.34 per cent year-on year to 15.20 crore in calendar year 2023. The total domestic passenger volumes in the year-ended December 31, 2022 were recorded at 12.32 crore, as per the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) data released on Monday. The domestic air passenger traffic in December 2023, however, rose 23.36 per cent at 1.37 crore, as against 1.27 crore flown by all local carriers in 2022. Of the total domestic passenger traffic, no-frills carrier IndiGo flew 9.19 crore with a market share of 60.5 per cent, followed by full-service carrier Air India, which transported 1.47 domestic passengers and commanded 9.7 per cent market share. Passenger traffic at Bangalore International Airport surged 35.3 per cent on a year-on-year basis to 37.2-million in calendar 2023, the private airport operator said on Friday. The facility had handled a total of 27.50-million passengers in the January-December period of 2022. During the previous year, it said, Cargo volumes rose 2 per cent on a year-on-year basis with the facility processing a total of 4,22,644 MT of cargo during CY 2023. Adani Group-owned Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Thursday said passenger traffic at its facility increased 13 per cent year-on-year to 4.88 million in December 2023. This was the highest-ever passenger traffic for the airport, the aerodrome operator said in a statement. Mumbai Airport had recorded a total passenger traffic of 4.33 million in December 2022, the statement said. Domestic air passenger traffic in the country recorded an annual growth of nearly 11 per cent to 1.26 crore in October, according to official data released on Thursday. The traffic stood at 1.14 crore passengers in October 2022 and at 1.22 crore passengers in September this year. The data released by aviation regulator DGCA showed that IndiGo carried 79.07 lakh passengers, garnering a domestic market share of 62.6 per cent in October. The market share was lower compared to 63.4 per cent registered in September. Last month, Air India's domestic market share climbed to 10.5 per cent from 9.8 per cent in September while that of Vistara and AirAsia India (renamed as AIX Connect) declined to 9.7 per cent and 6.6 per cent, respectively, in October. Passenger numbers at Dubai International Airport this year will eclipse the pre-pandemic passenger figures in 2019, showing the strong rebound in travel after the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns that grounded aircraft worldwide, a top official said Wednesday. GMR Airports Infrastructure Ltd (GIL) on Monday reported its consolidated net loss reduced to Rs 190 crore in the July-September quarter of the current fiscal year. The company had reported a net loss of Rs 197 crore in the quarter ended September 30, 2022. Company's net income during the reporting quarter rose 25 per cent to Rs 1,607 crore against a net income of Rs 1,285 crore achieved in the second quarter of previous fiscal, GIL said in a statement. The total passenger traffic increased by 25 per cent year-on-year to 26.5 million in the July-September period, the company said. EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) during the September quarter grew by 34 per cent year-on-year to Rs 848 crore, it said. Indian airport operators are projected to report 26 per cent rise in revenues at USD 3.9 billion in the next financial year, aviation consultancy CAPA India said on Wednesday. For 2023-24, air passenger traffic, including domestic and international, is expected to be 395 million, it said while presenting the outlook for the airports. Out of the total, domestic air passengers will rise to 320 million from 275 million this fiscal. During this period, the international air passenger count will increase to 75 million from 58 million. "India is forecast to see domestic airport pax rise to 700 million passengers, and international airport pax to 160 million passengers by FY2030," CAPA India said. It said Indian airports' revenue of USD 3.9 billion (Rs 32,390 crore) in the next fiscal will be 26 per cent higher than anticipated in 2022-23.
