State Bank of India (SBI) on Saturday reported an almost flat standalone net profit at Rs 17,035 crore for the first quarter of the current financial year. The country's biggest lender had posted a net profit of Rs 16,884 crore in the April-June quarter of 2023-24. The bank's total income increased to Rs 1,22,688 crore in the first quarter against Rs 1,08,039 crore a year ago, SBI said in a regulatory filing. During the quarter, the bank earned an interest income of Rs 1,11,526 crore compared to Rs 95,975 crore in the year-ago period. The bank's gross non-performing assets (NPA) of the total advances declined to 2.21 per cent in the first quarter from 2.76 per cent at June-end last year. Similarly, its net NPAs also eased to 0.57 per cent in June 2024 from 0.71 per cent a year ago. On a consolidated basis, SBI's net profit rose marginally to Rs 19,325 crore against Rs 18,537 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal. State-owned Union Bank of India on Saturday reported an 18.36 per cent growth in its consolidated net profit for the March quarter to Rs 3,328 crore, helped by lower provisions. For the fiscal 2023-24, the lender reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 13,797 crore against Rs 8,512 crore in the year-ago period. In the quarter under review, its standalone net profit increased to Rs 3,311 crore from Rs 2,782 crore a year ago. The core net interest income grew 14.38 per cent to Rs 9,437 crore on an 11.7 per cent growth in advances and widening of net interest margin to 3.10 per cent from 2.97 per cent in the year-ago period. Its managing director and chief executive A Manimekhalai told reporters that for FY25, it is aiming for a credit growth of 11-13 per cent and deposit growth to be between 9-11 per cent compared to 9.3 per cent in FY24. Banks have disbursed over Rs 1,400 crore in loans under the 'frictionless credit' platform since its launch on August 17, a senior Reserve Bank official said on Thursday. Speaking on the sidelines of an Assocham event, Ajay Kumar Choudhary, an executive director at the central bank, said around 20,000 central bank digital currency transactions are taking place on a daily basis right now. The RBI launched the new approach earlier this year under which lenders will be able to disburse retail loans like the ones to agriculturists in a matter of minutes, using an analytics engine that aggregates borrower details from multiple sources, including bank details and land records, to take a call on loan proposal.
