Country's first Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat died in a Mi-17 V5 helicopter crash on December 8, 2021, and a parliamentary panel report has said the reason behind the accident which occurred that day was "human error". Gen Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, and many other armed forces personnel had died after the military helicopter they were travelling in crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu. The accident was widely reported in the media. In the report tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, the Standing Committee on Defence shared the data on the number of Indian Air Force aircraft crashes that took place during the 13th Defence Plan period. The total number of crashes stood at 34, including nine IAF aircraft accidents that took place in 2021-22 and 11 in 2018-19. Blood samples are being collected in a graded manner as part of DNA fingerprinting of armed forces personnel and this process has so far helped identify mortal remains in 12 cases, including the helicopter crash that killed then Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, said Lieutenant General Daljit Singh, Director General - Armed Forces Medical Service (DGAFMS), on Monday. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan visited Air Force Station and forward areas in North Bengal along with General Officer Commanding, Trishakti Corps on April 8-9.He reviewed the progress of infrastructure development and operational and logistics preparedness in the area. The Indian Navy on Wednesday announced instituting two awards in the memory of India's first Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat. The Navy made the announcement on the eve of the late General's 65th birth anniversary on March 16. The first trophy would be Gen Bipin Rawat rolling trophy for the 'Women Agniveer Trainee standing first in overall order of merit'. Indian Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said the trophy for the current year will be presented by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar during the 'Passing Out Parade' of the first batch of Navy Agniveers on March 28 at the Navy's premier sailors training centre INS Chilka. Gen Bipin Rawat's younger brother Col (retd) Vijay Rawat, who recently joined the BJP, on Sunday said he is not contesting the upcoming assembly polls in Uttarakhand. Col Rawat said he was asked by party leaders to contest but he said no to them. Asked what if they insist on fielding him, he said 99 per cent chances are that he would politely refuse. "I am not contesting the polls. I am interested only in serving the people of Uttarakhand," Col Rawat said in an interview to PTI. Joining the BJP less than a month ahead of the state assembly polls had given rise to speculation in the media that he might be given a ticket by the party. "My purpose behind joining the BJP was serving people and not holding an office or a post. During my 34 years in the Army I was transferred to different places. I didn't get a chance to serve people of my own state. Now that I am retired I can do that," he said. "I don't want to be tied up to a post. I want to serve people freely," he said. Col Rawat
