Cotton production may decline by around 8 per cent to 294.10 lakh bales in the 2023-24 season due to lower yields in most growing regions, according to the Cotton Association of India (CAI) estimates released on Thursday. The total cotton production during the 2022-23 season (October-September) stood at 318.90 lakh bales of 170 kg each, according to CAI data. "The production this year is expected to lower by 24.8 lakh bales at 294.10 lakh bales following infestation of pink ball worms in the northern region, while the yield in the southern and the central regions will be affected due to no rainfall for 45 days from August, 1 till September 15," CAI president Atul Ganatra told PTI. The total supply till the end of November 2023 is estimated at 92.05 lakh bales which consists of the arrivals of 60.15 lakh bales, imports of 3 lakh bales and the opening stock of 28.90 lakh bales at the beginning of the season. The Cotton Association of India (CAI) on Saturday lowered cotton pressing estimates for the 2023-24 marketing season, beginning from October 1, at 294.10 lakh bales due to crop damage following pink bollworm infestation and uprooting of cotton plants by farmers in Haryana. In Haryana, CAI estimated the cotton pressing to be at 15 lakh bales in 2023-24, compared to 11 lakh bales in the last season, CAI said in a statement. In 2021-22, the total cotton pressing stood at 318.90 lakh bales, the statement said. The total supply is estimated at 54.74 lakh bales for October, which consists of the arrivals of 24.34 lakh bales, imports of 1.50 lakh bales and the opening stock estimated by the CAI at 28.90 lakh bales at the beginning of the season. Further, the CAI has estimated cotton consumption at 26 lakh bales, while the export shipments up to October 31 are estimated at 1 lakh bales. The country's cotton production is estimated at 29.51 million bales in the 2023-24 marketing season, the lowest in 15 years on less planting amid the El Nino effect, the Cotton Association of India (CAI) said on Tuesday. The cotton marketing season runs from October to September. One bale of cotton is 170 kg. Cotton production is lower by 7.49 per cent from 31.89 million bales in the 2022-23 marketing season. It is also lower than the government estimate of 31.65 million bales for 2023-24. Releasing the first estimate, the CAI said, "After 2008-09, this is the lowest Indian cotton crop." Total area sown to cotton is lower by 5.5 per cent and yield is also expected to drop by up to 20 per cent due to unfavourable weather caused by El Nino, it said. Cotton exports are estimated to decline 64 per cent in 2022-23 marketing year ended September due to higher prices of the commodity in the domestic market, Cotton Association of India (CAI) said on Monday. The cotton marketing year begins from October. Cotton export during 2021-22 marketing year was 43 lakh bales which fell to 15.50 lakh bales in 2022-23, according to CAI data. "The plunge in exports to 15.50 lakh bales in 2022-23, is mainly due to higher cotton prices in India, which was much higher than the global prices, during October till March. The high prices have impacted cotton exports from India," CAI President Atul Ganatra told PTI. Cotton imports are also expected to decline in 2022-23 by 2.50 lakh bales to 12.50 lakh bales following higher import duty, Ganatra added. The Cotton Association of India (CAI) on Tuesday maintained the cotton crop production forecast for the 2022-23 season at 311.18 lakh bales. In the last cotton season, the total cotton production was at 307.05 lakh bales, CAI said in a statement. The cotton season runs from October to September. The total cotton supply for October 2022 to July 2023 is estimated at 332.30 lakh bales, which consists of arrivals of 296.80 lakh bales, imports of 11.50 lakh bales and the opening stock estimated by the CAI at 24 lakh bales at the beginning of the season. Further, the CAI has estimated cotton consumption for the months of October 2022 to July 2023 at 265 lakh bales, while the export shipments up to July 31, are estimated at 14 lakh bales. Stocks at the end of July is estimated at 53.30 lakh bales including 28 lakh bales with textile mills and the remaining 25.30 lakh bales with the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), Maharashtra Federation and others (MNCs, traders, ginners among others)

The government on Wednesday approved a Rs 17,408.85 crore 'committed price support' to the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) for seven cotton seasons from 2014-15 to 2020-21. The decision was taken at the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The CCEA has approved incurring expenditure for reimbursing losses under MSP operations for cotton during the cotton season (October-September) 2014-15 to 2020-21. The CCEA has given its approval for committed price support of Rs 17,408.85 crore to the CCI for the cotton seasons from 2014-15 to 2020-21 (up to September 30, 2021), an official release said.
