JSW Steel on Monday posted a record output of 26.43 million tonnes of crude steel during financial year 2023-24, registering an on-year growth of 9 per cent. It had produced 24.14 million tonnes (MnT) crude steel on a consolidated basis in preceding financial year, JSW Steel said in a statement. In the January-March period of 2024, the consolidated output was at 6.79 MnT, higher by 3 per cent over 6.58 MnT in the year-ago quarter. "JSW Steel has achieved its highest-ever annual consolidated crude steel production of 26.43 MnT, with a growth of 9 per cent YoY. The production for Q4 FY24 stood at 6.79 MnT, higher by 3 per cent YoY," it said. The company produced 25.55 MnT steel from its India operations, up 8 per cent over 23.62 MnT in the last fiscal. JSW Steel on Tuesday reported a 12 per cent year-on-year rise in its consolidated crude steel production to 6.87 million tonnes (MT) in October-December period of ongoing fiscal. Its consolidated crude steel production was at 6.14 MT in the same period last financial year, according to a statement. From its India operations, the company produced 6.63 MT of steel in October-December, up 9 per cent over 6.06 MT in the year-ago period. In India, the capacity utilisation level stood at 94 per cent in the third quarter. JSW Steel USA - Ohio produced 0.24 MT steel, up three-fold from 0.8 MT produced in October-December 2022-23. India's crude steel production rose 14.7 per cent to 69.65 million tonne (MT) during April-September period of 2023-24 fiscal year, according to SteelMint India. The steel output in the year-ago period was 61.06 MT, the market research firm said. The increase in production was mainly on account of improved capacity utilisation rates coupled with the ramping up of capacities by key Indian steel players, it said. According to SteelMint, these factors will continue to support the growth in production in the second half of the ongoing fiscal as well. The domestic consumption of finished steel also rose 14.77 per cent to 63.99 MT from 55.75 MT in the six-month period a year ago. During the period, the country saw exports shrinking 10.25 per cent to 3.23 MT from 3.60 MT in April-September 2022-23. India's crude steel production rose by 5.80 per cent to 124.45 million tonne (MT) in 2022, according to SteelMint. The country had produced 117.63 MT crude steel in 2021, the market research firm said. The production of finished steel was at 110.03 MT, up from over 104.54 MT a year ago, SteelMint said in its latest report. The consumption of finished steel rose to 106.48 MT, as against 98.39 MT in 2021, a year-on-year rise of 8 per cent. SteelMint attributed the increase in output and consumption to "continuous focus of the government on the infrastructure sector." According to the report, the exports in 2022 have registered a fall over the previous year, while the imports have grown in the year ended December 31. At 4.77 MT, the imports were 21 per cent higher against 3.94 MT in 2021. The exports registered a sharp fall of 44 per cent to 10.37 MT in 2022 compared to 18.5 MT a year ago. The import of raw material coking coal was almost flat at 55.94 MT in 2022, the report said.

JSW Steel on Monday said its combined crude steel production rose 17 per cent to 6.24 million tonne (MT) during October-December period of 2022-23. The combined production during the year-ago quarter was at 5.35 MT, JSW Steel said in a statement. "JSW Steel reported its group combined crude steel production at 6.24 million tonne for Q3 FY23 registering a growth of 17 per cent y-o-y (year-on-year), including the production at jointly controlled entities," it said. Its standalone output rose 20 per cent to 6.06 MT in Q3 from 5.05 MT in the year-ago period. According to the company, the combined production includes output of jointly controlled entities Bhushan Power & Steel Ltd (BPSL) and JSW Ispat Special Products Ltd (JISPL), and offshore entity JSW Steel USA Ohio. JSW Steel is among India's top six steel making companies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India has set a target to double the crude steel production capacity from 154 million tonnes per annum now to 300 million tonnes per annum in the next 9 to 10 years in an order to boost indigenous capabilities. In his virtual address as the chief guest at the "bhoomi pujan" of expansion of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India's flagship plant at Hazira in Gujarat's Surat district, Modi said in the past, India had to import high grade steel for the defence sector, but scenario has changed now. Now, however, steel used in making 'INS Vikrant' (first indigenous aircraft carrier) was made in India, said the prime minister. "Due to everybody's efforts in the last eight years, the Indian steel industry has become the second biggest in the world," he said.

JSW Steel on Monday reported a 22 per cent jump in crude steel production in August this year to 16.76 lakh tonne. The private steel major had produced 13.77 lakh tonne in the year-ago month. The production of flat products at 12.01 lakh tonne in the last month was higher than 8.99 lakh tonne in August 2021. Long product volume grew by 25 per cent to 3.75 lakh tonne in the month under review as compared to 3.01 lakh tonne in the corresponding month last year. JSW officials said the average capacity utilisation was lower at 87.4 per cent due to a shortage of iron ore both in Karnataka and Odisha regions.
