Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday said dairy is a sensitive sector in India as it involves livelihood issues of small farmers and there are no plans to give duty concessions under any Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in this area. He said India has not given any duty concessions in the dairy sector even to Switzerland and Norway under the EFTA (European Free Trade Association) trade pact, which was signed in March. India's dairy industry is expected to witness healthy revenue growth of 13-14 per cent this financial year, as strong consumer demand continues along with improved supply of raw milk, a report said on Wednesday. While demand will be supported by rising consumption of value added products (VAP), ample milk supply will be driven by good monsoon prospects, Crisil Ratings said in a report. West Assam Milk Producers' Co-operative Union Ltd (WAMUL), known under the brand Purabi Dairy, on Sunday said it has joined hands with the Assam government to operate a 5,000-litre daily capacity plant in Dhemaji district. Purabi Dairy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Directorate of Dairy Development (DoDD), enabling WAMUL to operate the DoDD's 5,000-litre per day capacity dairy plant at Dhemaji, the company said in a statement. The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) on Tuesday announced a hike in milk prices with effect from June 26, but it also said it would be enhancing the quantity of milk in its half and one litre packets by 50 ml. This comes days after the Karnataka government hiked sales tax on fuel, following which petrol prices have gone up by Rs 3 per litre and diesel by Rs 3.5 per litre in the state. "As it is the current harvest season, the storage of milk in all district milk unions is increasing every day and the current storage is close to one crore litres. In this background, the price of each packet is being increased by Rs 2 with an additional 50 ml of milk being given to the consumers only for each half liter (500ML) and one liter (1000ML) packets," KMF said in a statement. The government is planning to launch a nationwide programme to rope in dairy and fishery cooperative societies as banking correspondents to expand financial services in rural areas, a top official said on Wednesday. Ministry of Cooperation Secretary Ashish Kumar Bhutani said the programme would leverage the existing network of dairy and fishery cooperatives to act as "bank mitras" or banking agents by offering services such as micro-ATMs and lower-interest farm loans. The Delhi High Court has directed authorities to take action against the spurious use of oxytocin in dairy colonies here, saying the administration of the hormone amounts to animal cruelty and is an offence. A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan Court asked the Delhi government's department of drugs control to conduct weekly inspections and register cases which will be investigated by the police. The court further asked the Intelligence Department of Delhi Police to identify the sources of oxytocin production, packaging and distribution and take action in accordance with law. The court's order came on a petition by Sunayana Sibal and others concerning the state of dairies in the national capital. The West Bengal government will build a greenfield modern dairy project worth Rs 65.48 crore at Haringhata in Nadia district, the first since 1970s. Ice Make Refrigeration Limited has received the turnkey contract from West Bengal Livestock Development Corporation Limited (WBLDCL), which is the executing agency for Banglar Dairy Ltd, owned by the state government's animal resources department. A preliminary probe into the murder of a minor girl by a 20-year-old youth in northwest Delhi's Shahbad Dairy has revealed that the youth was enraged by his break up with the victim and was further infuriated with the fight the two had, triggering him to launch the fatal assault, police said on Monday. Police arrested Sahil from Bulandshahr after a call from his aunt to his father was traced to his location to the Uttar Pradesh district, they said.
