The city recorded its coldest December day in the last three years on Thursday as the minimum temperature dropped to 4.5 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperatures in early December have been recorded below 5 degrees Celsius for the first time in 14 years, it said. According to data, the lowest minimum temperature during this period was recorded on December 6, 1987, at 4.1 degrees Celsius. The IMD has issued a yellow alert, warning of similar cold wave conditions for the next two days. The night-time temperature was recorded at 4.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, 4.7 notches below the normal. On Tuesday, it was 8 degrees Celsius. According to the data, in December 2023 and 2022, there were no cold wave days. However, November 2020 saw cold wave conditions with the minimum temperature plunging to 7.5 degrees Celsius. Delhi on Saturday recorded a minimum temperature of 6.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average, with dense fog in some isolated pockets of the city, according to the India Meteorological Department. Palam area recorded 50-metre visibility at 5.30 am. No dense fog was reported at Delhi Airports at 8.30 am on Saturday. The Delhi airport saw diversions of at least three flights on Wednesday morning due to bad weather, according to an official. Several flights were also delayed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in the national capital, he said. A total of five flights were diverted to various destinations between 9.30 pm on Tuesday and 7 am on Wednesday, the official said. Out of these, three were diverted to Jaipur in Rajasthan and one each to Ahmedabad in Gujarat and Mumbai in Maharashtra, the official said on Wednesday. There was no let-up in the cold wave condition in Punjab and Haryana on Saturday with minimum temperatures staying below normal at several places. Hisar in Haryana was the coldest place as it shivered at 3.1 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal, according to a report of the Meteorological Department here. Among other places, Ambala and Karnal experienced cold weather conditions at 6.2 and 4.6 degrees Celsius respectively.
