Thousands of people, fans, celebrities and politicians thronged the Island Grounds near the Marina beach here on Friday to pay homage to actor-turned politician Vijayakanth. Top actor Rajinikanth, who rushed here from Kanyakumari district to pay his last respects, laid a garland on the decorated casket and almost cried when he recounted two incidents that showed Vijayakanth's values and the importance he attached to friendship and supporting colleagues. Rajinikanth said that though crores of men and women live and die in this world, it is only a few like Vijayakanth and people of his ilk live forever in the hearts of people. Expressing anguish, he said though Vijayakanth used to get angry, but selfishness had never been the reason behind it. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday condoled the death of DMDK founder-leader and veteran Tamil actor Vijayakanth, and said he had inspired patriotism among people both through his onscreen and offscreen roles. Vijayakanth had been ill and kept a low-profile for the past 4-5 years and his wife Premalatha formally took over the reins of DMDK on December 14 as general secretary. "Deeply saddened to learn about the passing of DMDK leader and respected film veteran Vijayakanth Ji. DMDK founder-leader Vijayakanth has been put on ventilator support, the party said on Thursday. Diagnostic tests confirmed coronavirus infection, the party said in a release, adding in view of difficulty in breathing, he has been put on ventilator support. Yesteryear Tamil actor and DMDK founder Vijayakanth has been unwell for quite some time and his wife Premalatha took over the reins of the party days ago. Vijayakanth is about 71 years old.
