The Delhi government has sent the file of Cabinet decision to continue electricity subsidy scheme in 2024-25 for approval of Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, government officials on Saturday said. The Delhi Cabinet on Thursday last approved the scheme for providing free electricity supply to consumers with monthly 200 units and 50 percent subsidy to those having 201-400 units consumption per month. However, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal speaking in the Assembly on Saturday on his government's budget for 2024-25 alleged that the BJP wanted to send him to jail and stop good works of his government like free electricity scheme and shut down Mohalla Clinics and hospitals. BRS Working President K T Rama Rao on Saturday said people should not pay their power bills until the Congress government in Telangana provided free electricity under the 'Gruha Jyothi' scheme as per its election promise. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had said during the recent Assembly election campaign that party leader Sonia Gandhi would pay the electricity bills after the Congress came to power and people should send their bills to Sonia Gandhi's house at 10, Janpath in New Delhi, Rama Rao said. If officials ask for payment of power bills, Revnath Reddy's video should be shown, he said, addressing the BRS leaders of Hyderabad and Secunderabad Parliamentary constituencies as part of preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. "KTR stated that people should not pay the power bills until free electricity was provided under the Gruha Jyothi scheme as promised by Revanth Reddy," a release from his office said. The Electricity Amendment Bill 2022 tabled in Parliament in August will benefit private players and hurt common citizens, a senior functionary of an employees' outfit said on Saturday. Mohan Sharma, national general secretary of All India Federation of Electricity Employees, said the Bill will stop power subsidy to famers and common consumers. "While private companies will supply electricity to commercial consumers, the government distribution companies will suffer losses by providing subsidised electricity to farmers and common consumers. As a result, state-run power firms will become loss-making companies," he claimed. The Bill, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 8, was referred for scrutiny to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy on the same day.
