Railways will achieve 100 per cent electrification in the next fiscal year and is making rapid progress in the usage of renewable energy as well, union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Monday. In a virtual address at the MP Global Investors Summit (GIS) 2025 after the signing of a power purchase agreement with the state, Railways Minister Vaishnaw said the government has set a target of making railways net zero by 2030. As of date, over 97 per cent electrification of Railways has been achieved and by FY 2025-26, it will achieve 100 per cent electrification, he added. On drawing power from renewable energy sources, the minister said 1,500 MW or 1.5 GW capacity has already been tied to be supplied to Railways as of date. "The 170 MW power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with Madhya Pradesh today is an important step in this direction," he added. GE Vernova T&D India on Wednesday posted a nearly 3-fold jump in its net profit to Rs 142.68 crore in the December quarter compared to a year ago, mainly on the back of higher revenues. The company had a net profit of Rs 49.35 crore in the quarter ended on December 31, 2023, according to a regulatory filing. Total income rose to Rs 1,099.45 crore during the third quarter against Rs 834.72 crore a year ago. Indian Railways is advancing the electrification of Broad Gauge railway lines at a mission-driven pace, achieving approximately 97 per cent electrification of its total Broad Gauge network, Union Minister of Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw stated in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.Vaishnaw noted that around 45,200 route kilometres of the Broad Gauge network have been electrified since 2014-15. He highlighted a significant increase in the pace of electrification, from approximately 1.42 km per day during 2004-14 to about 19.7 km per day in 2023-24.He further emphasised that electric traction is not only more environmentally friendly but also approximately 70 per cent more economical compared to diesel traction.The Union Minister stressed the importance of a reliable power supply for electric train operations. Siemens Limited, as part of a consortium along with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, has secured an order worth Rs 766 crore from Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited for electrification of Bengaluru Metro Phase 2 project contributing to sustainable public transport in the city, officials said on Wednesday. Siemens Limited's share as part of the consortium is approximately Rs 558 crore, they said. In a statement, Siemens Limited said it will design, engineer, install and commission rail electrification technologies as well as a digital solution comprising Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. The project covers 30 stations spanning over 58 km connecting Bengaluru Airport terminal to Central Silk Board via KR Puram and two depots. With this order, Siemens is present in 11 out of 20 cities that have a Metro in India, it stated. The Indian Railways is moving forward with the aim of 100 per cent electrification of all rail lines in the next few months, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said here on Tuesday. He was speaking after inaugurating and laying the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth more than Rs 8,000 crore at Nizamabad in Telangana. With the electrification of two key routes, the northeastern state of Meghalaya will see the operation of electric trains for the first time, the Railways said in a statement. The Northeast Frontier Railway has achieved the milestone by commissioning a 22.823 track kilometre single-line stretch of Dudhnai-Mendipathar and 34.59 track kilometre between the Abhayapuri-Pancharatna double-line section on March 15. In a statement, the Railways said that presently Mendipathar is the only railway station in the north-eastern state of Meghalaya which is in operation since 2014 after being inaugurated by the prime minister. After the commissioning of electric traction, trains hauled by electric locomotive will now be able to operate directly from Mendipathar in Meghalaya which will increase the average speed. Electrification and automation major ABB India can utilise around Rs 1,800 crore of its cash balance for inorganic growth or acquisitions apart from organic expansion plans, a top company official said.
