An FIR has been registered against Vishwa Vokkaliga Mahasamastana Math seer Kumara Chandrashekaranatha Swamiji for his remarks on voting power to Muslims, police said on Friday. The Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday lodged an FIR against the organisers of the religious congregation in Hathras where 121 people died in a stampede, accusing them of hiding evidence and flouting conditions with 2.5 lakh people gathering for the event in which only 80,000 were permitted. However, the congregation or 'satsang' conductor Jagat Guru Saakar Vishwahari has not been named in the FIR though his name is in the complaint. The FIR alleged that the organisers hid the actual number of devotees coming to the 'satsang' while seeking permission, did not cooperate in traffic management and hid evidence after the stampede, which broke out after people gathered there stopped to collect mud from the way the baba's vehicle was passing. The Delhi High Court on Monday sought the CBI's response on a plea by human rights activist Harsh Mander and his NGO seeking quashing of an FIR lodged against them for alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). Justice Vikas Mahajan issued notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the petition and asked the agency, which orally assured the court that it was not going to arrest Mander as of now, to file its status report before the next date of hearing. The high court listed the matter for further hearing on August 29. During the hearing, senior advocate Nitya Ramakrishna, appearing for former IAS officer Mander and his NGO Centre of Equity Studies (CES), urged the court to grant an interim relief of no coercive action against the petitioners. Cases were registered in Madhya Pradesh's Mhow city on Saturday after two local leaders of the BJP and Vishva Hindu Parishad lodged complaints of threatening against each other, police said. On the complaint of Mhow BJP president Piyush Agrawal, an FIR under IPC sections 294 (abusing), 506 B (threatening) and 450 (house trespass) was registered against VHP leader and 'cow vigilante' Shubham Thakur. Subsequently, on Thakur's complaint, another First Information Report with the same charges was registered against Agrawal, said Mhow police station in-charge Sanjay Dwivedi. As Thakur belongs to a Scheduled Tribe community, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was also invoked against Agrawal, he told PTI. Probe was on, he added.

Police has registered a case against about 160 people for allegedly forcibly entering into flats built under a government scheme in Maharashtra's Thane district while protesting against the housing project on village land, officials said on Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday when the people from Bhandarli and Gotheghar villages allegedly entered three buildings, broke the locks of 400 flats and occupied them, police said. The villagers have long been opposing the project developed by the Konkan Housing and Area Development Board in the two villages under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, an official from Daighar police station said quoting the FIR. They had earlier put up banners warning that they would enter the houses on November 7, the FIR said. A probe is on into the case, the official added.

Former Karnataka Minister and BJP MLA Munirathna has been booked under the Explosives Act and Karnataka Land Revenue Act along with three others for carrying out blasts to mine stones in a quarry at Hunasamaranahalli. Based on a complaint by the Yelahanka Tehsildar Anil Arolikar, the Chikkajala police registered a case against Munirathna, Anandan, Ganesh V and RAdhamma. The FIR said the Jai Bhim Sene had requested the Tehsildar to stop the 'illegal' mining activities. The villagers too had staged a demonstration against the usage of explosives for quarrying. Following the complaint, a field survey was carried out, where it was found that explosives were used for quarrying. These activities were damaging earth in that region, according to the FIR. The sale of stones was also resulting in loss to the state government. The investigation also revealed that those mining the quarry did not have any permission from the competent authority, the FIR said.

A court here on Wednesday came down hard on the Delhi Police for wrongly and casually clubbing as many as 27 complaints of separate incidents of rioting and arson during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots with a pre-existing FIR, and directed a senior police officer to ensure the additional complaints were investigated properly. Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala's order came while acquitting three people, who were named as accused in the original FIR with which 27 complaints were clubbed, for the offences of rioting and arson. Akil Ahmed, Raheesh Khan and Irshad were accused of being part of a rampaging mob that had looted and set ablaze the complainant's shop in Chandu Nagar on February 24, 2020 during the riots. The judge said the charges were not proved against them beyond reasonable doubt. While acquitting the three accused in the main case, the court was severely critical of Delhi Police's action of clubbing 27 complaints with the main FIR and improper and inadequate ..

Police have registered two separate FIRs in connection with a scuffle that broke out between two groups of students on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, officials said on Friday. Police had said that two students were injured in Thursday's clash, while university sources claimed only one student suffered injuries.
