India has a robust regulatory framework for its 548 seafood units and it has set up world-class facilities in the fish processing sector, which are regularly inspected and monitored by various government agencies, the commerce ministry said on Saturday. The statement comes in the backdrop of some reports alleging food safety and bad labour conditions in the Indian shrimp industry. It said that all its units are registered with MPEDA (Marine Products Export Development Authority) and FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) and approved by EIC (export inspection council) as mandated by the law. Additionally, 46 independent pre-processing units are registered by the authority. The shrimp hatcheries and aquaculture farms are registered with the Coastal Aquaculture Authority (CAA) and State Fisheries Departments based on their respective locations. The state government has banned the sale, storage and transportation of all kinds of fishes within the municipal area of Patna. The ban, initially for 15 days, was imposed after high contents of formalin, lead, mercury and cadmium were found in fish samples. The ban is imposed under the provisions of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The violation of the ban is punishable with imprisonment up to 7 years and a fine of Rs. 10 lakh.The decision was taken to prevent ailments due to consumption of such fishes, said the health department officials. "We had collected fish samples last October from various locations within the Patna Municipal Corporation area and sent them to Food security Laboratory, Kolkata for testing," said Sanjay Kumar, Principal Secretary Health Department and Food Safety Commission for Bihar.
