With the approval for a revised policy, the Goa government is eyeing a revenue of about Rs 500 crore from e-auction of unclaimed iron ore heaps lying on private lands, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Thursday. The state government on Thursday approved the revised Goa Iron Ore Mining Dump Handling Policy, 2023, which allows it to e-auction unclaimed ore lying in the form of dumps at various private locations in the state. The iron ore mining. a major source of revenue, has been halted in the coastal state since 2012 following a Supreme Court order. The state has now begun e-auctioning of the mining blocks. Iron ore mining in Goa may resume in 2023-24, said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday and asserted that the coastal state has turned the G20 and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meetings into opportunities to promote its tourism industry. Speaking at a meeting of the NITI Aayog, the Centre's apex public policy think tank, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sawant said Goa has taken steps for the auction of iron ore blocks to resume mining activities. The industry, which used to be one of the major revenue earners for the state, had come to a standstill in 2018 after the Supreme Court quashed 88 mining leases. The first auction of four iron ore mineral blocks has been successfully completed in December 2022 and the government has received an upfront payment of Rs 43 crore from them. The Goa government has completed the first phase of auction of mining blocks with four companies winning bids for the extraction of ore from different mineral rich stretches of the coastal state, an official said on Thursday. The state Directorate of Mines and Geology (DMG) had conducted the e-auctioning process which will pave way for the resumption of the state's iron ore mining industry in the state.
