The Madhya Pradesh government will soon recruit 30,000 health workers, including 3,000 doctors, to strengthen medical services in the state, Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla has said. Once a sufficient number of doctors and paramedical staff are available, the arrangements in the district hospitals as well as community and primary health centres will improve, Shukla said on Sunday. The deputy CM, who holds charge of the state health department, was talking to reporters in Rewa. He said 30,000 health workers, including 3,000 doctors, will be recruited in the state health department soon. Shukla also said that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is organising the Regional Industry Conclave in Rewa on October 23. This will lead to huge investment for industrial development not only in Rewa but in the entire Vindhya region, he said. The government may consider introducing appropriate legal safeguards for healthcare workers, who at times face violence from relatives or attendants of patients, a parliamentary panel has said. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs headed by BJP member Brij Lal, which examined the proposed three criminal laws, discussed a memoranda submitted by various medical associations requesting it to introduce provisions under Clause 115 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to penalise acts of violence against healthcare service personnel. The committee, in its report, said it was submitted before the panel that unlike in any other professions, healthcare professionals are vulnerable to "violent attacks" by relatives of patients, in cases where patients die during treatment. As many as 1,760 youngsters who were selected as multipurpose health workers will receive appointment letters at a function in Gandhinagar on May 3, an official said on Tuesday. Gujarat Energy and Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai will hand over the appointment letters at Mahatma Mandir, a convention centre in the state capital, he said. The Gujarat Panchayat Service Selection Board had chosen 1,760 youngsters from nearly 41,000 candidates who had appeared for the competitive exam held in June last year, and a final merit list of selected candidates was published in March, the official said. Of the selected candidates, 26 belong to general category, 337 are from Scheduled Castes, 245 from Scheduled Tribes, 884 are from Other Backward Class (OBC) categories, while 268 belong to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category, he said. A large number of community health officials posted in rural areas of Maharashtra assembled at the Azad Maidan in Mumbai on Wednesday for a one-day strike to press for their various demands including a permanent government job. Their other demands include reduction in workload, allotment of wages on time and insurance by the state government. Community health officers (CHOs) work in rural areas at primary health centres. They are currently working on a contract. Although their contracts get renewed, the CHOs have now demanded to make them permanent employees of the state government, sources said. As many as 352 healthcare workers, including 157 doctors, of PGIMER here have tested positive for the novel coronavirus since during the past over a fortnight, the premier institute said in a statement on Friday. "A total of 352 Healthcare Workers (HCWs) have tested positive since 20th December, 2021 in Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. Of these, 157 are doctors Junior Residents, Senior Residents & Faculty Members," the statement said. It further said that the increase in cases amongst HCWs is commensurate with increase in cases amongst the population at large. "More than 95 per cent of HCWs who tested positive had received both doses of COVID-19 vaccine. It is reassuring to note that almost all of these infections have been mild. The Jharkhand government on Friday approved a number of proposals including one month's extra pay to Covid health workers and enhancement in honorarium for mid-day meal assistants. The decisions were taken at a Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Sorent. The Jharkhand government last month announced Rs 103 crore incentive for frontline health workers. "The Cabinet has approved incentives for health department workers including doctors engaged in coronavirus related contact tracing, testing, supervision etc work in COVID hospitals and wards besides control rooms, which will be equivalent to their one month's salary," an official statement after the Cabinet meeting said.
