The Bombay High Court on Monday refused to release Mihir Shah, the main accused in a BMW hit-and-run case, on the ground of "illegal" arrest. Shah, the 24-year-old son of a former Shiv Sena leader, and his driver Rajrishi Bidawat had filed petitions in the HC claiming they have been illegally detained and sought immediate release. Shah was arrested on July 9, two days after he allegedly rammed his BMW car into a two-wheeler in Mumbai's Worli area, killing 45-year-old woman Kaveri Nakhwa and leaving her husband Pradeep injured. His driver Bidawat, who was also present in the car at the time of the accident, was arrested on the day of the incident. As per their pleas, the police had not informed them the grounds of their arrest at the time, which they claimed was in violation of the law. Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule's son Sanket, who is in eye of a storm after his luxury car hit several vehicles in Nagpur, did not consume beef at a city-based bar before the accident involving his vehicle, police said on Wednesday. But he consumed liquor along with some mutton and chicken dishes there, the police said. The police gave this information in the wake of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut's allegation made earlier in the day that Sanket consumed beef at the bar. The Audi car owned by Sanket hit several vehicles in Ramdaspeth area in Nagpur in the early hours of Monday, leaving two persons injured. A court here on Tuesday remanded Mihir Shah, the prime accused in the BMW hit-and-run case, in 14-day judicial custody. Shah, 24, was arrested on July 9, two days after he allegedly rammed his BMW car into a two-wheeler, killing a woman, identified as Kaveri Nakhwa (45), and leaving her husband, Pradeep, injured in Mumbai's Worli area. The main accused in the case was produced before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (Sewri court) S P Bhosale at the end of his remand on Tuesday. Police sought extension of his custody saying the accused has not given information about the persons who harboured him while he was on the run. He has still not given information about the missing number plate, the police, represented by public prosecutors Ravindra Patil and Bharti Bhosle, submitted in the court. A 32-year-old man died after his bike collided with a juvenile's bike in south Mumbai on Thursday, police said. The incident came days after the May 19 Pune accident involving a Porsche car driven by a 17-year-old boy in which two people were killed. The man injured in Thursday's accident in Mazgaon area, Irfan Nawab Ali Shaikh, was rushed to J J Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. Police detained the juvenile and transferred him to Dongri Children's Home in Mumbai, an official said. His father has been arrested, the official added.
Amid outrage over the mowing down of two persons by a Porsche driven by a minor in Pune, police here are examining the conduct of their own officers who allegedly let off a 15-year-old boy involved in a hit-and-run case that killed two people last October. Out on the road again, the boy was allegedly involved in another accident in March that left four people injured. According to the police, the teenager was apprehended on May 21 and a departmental inquiry was ordered on Thursday, two days after the Pune accident. In the first incident that took place in October last year, the teenager had allegedly fatally run over two people by his speeding car in the Barra area here, a senior official, adding that he indulged in a repeat accident in March this year as no timely action was taken against him. Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), set to replace the Indian Penal Code, drivers who cause serious road accidents due to negligent driving and run away without informing authorities face up to 10 years in prison or a fine of Rs 7 lakh. The Cabinet sub-committee comprising Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal held a meeting with the representatives of the truck and taxi unions of the state here, according to an official release. A Delhi court has granted bail to Deepak Khanna, an accused in the Kanjhawala case in which a 20-year-old woman was dragged to death under a car here on New Year's Day. The court said the allegations against Khanna did not reveal that he was "in conspiracy with" other accused persons for the offence of murder and that in case of bailable offences, the relief has to be granted mandatorily and not as a matter of concession.
