Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday announced that an electronics component technology for the ambitious Hyperloop project, developed by IIT-Madras, will be built at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. After his visit to the Hyperloop testing facility at IIT Madras' Thaiyur campus, Vaishnaw, who holds the portfolios for Information and Broadcasting, Electronics and Information Technology, said the 410-meter-long Hyperloop test tube is the longest of its kind in Asia. As many as Ten Hyperloop teams comprising 200 students are competing in Asia's first Global Hyperloop Competition (GHC) 2025 being organised by the IIT Madras, according to officials. The event from Feb 21-25 will also host 150 industry delegates from across the world, representing the mobility, research and hyperloop sectors. The competition is being held at "Discovery", Indian Institute of Technology Madras' Satellite Campus located in Thaiyur, about 36 km from the main campus. Steel giant ArcelorMittal has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras to build "Asia's first" Hyperloop test track facility here, the company said here on Wednesday. The companies, ArcelorMittal and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS), are providing foundational steel materials as well as engineering, design, and project management expertise to support the construction of Asia's first Hyperloop test track at the 163-acre Discovery campus of IIT Madras, located at Thaiyur on the outskirts of Chennai, a company release here said. Some foreign companies have shown interest to bring hyperloop technology for ultra-high-speed travel in India, but discussions are at a very early stage, Niti Aayog Member VK Saraswat said on Friday. Saraswat, who is heading a committee to explore the technological and commercial viability of the Virgin hyperloop technology, said the committee has prepared a preliminary report. "We have also interacted with some of the companies which are foreign companies, which are already developing this (hyperloop) technology. A team of IIT-Madras students working on the development of a hyperloop system on Wednesday said that an arm of engineering, procurement and construction major Larsen & Toubro will give funds and technical support to the project. L&T Technology Services, which focuses on rendering engineering services, will provide funds and technical support to Team Avishkar's hyperloop project, which features high-speed train travel in near-vacuum tubes at a speed of over 1,200 kilometre per hour, an official statement said. Avishkar is aiming to build the world's largest student-developed hyperloop testing facility at IIT-Madras, and is hoping to complete the construction of this 500-metre hyperloop by this year.
