Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar led the Indian side while the Japanese side was headed by Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Minister of Defence Taro Kono
The meeting between prime minister Modi and Abe comes after they met at the G-20 Summit in Osaka in Japan and on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Biarritz in France
They will hold a formal summit on Monday in Tokyo, during which strengthening bilateral security and economic cooperation are expected to be high on the agenda
Besides bilateral issues, the two leaders are expected to deliberate on a range of regional and global issues, including the situation in the Indo-Pacific region
