Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam to discuss India Post's path to profitability, an official release said on Saturday. Scindia, along with officials from the Department of Posts, presented their capital expenditure demands to the finance minister to make it a profit centre by 2029. Scindia aims to make India Post globally competitive and has been leading Department-wide efforts to drive higher customer acquisition, retention and operational efficiency. During the meeting with the finance minister, Scindia presented a new development plan for India Post and said the department is working on rationalising costs and aiming to make most processes digital. The minister hopes to make the department a profit-making logistics company with a focus on customer satisfaction, as per the release. He also mentioned that the ongoing Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) exercise will benefit a lot from the investment from the finance ministry.
The Department of Posts and the Ministry of External Affairs have signed an agreement to set up an additional 600 passport seva kendras at post offices, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Friday. Speaking at the India Economic Enclave 2024, the minister said India Post has about 6,40,000 points of sales across the country and no one in the world can match its scale. "In the next 3-4 years, we will become a citizen-centric service. We have signed an agreement with the MEA today where we will set up 600 more networks for passport seva kendras, hopefully servicing one crore citizens per year through our network," the minister said. Launched in 2017, the Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) service has been instrumental in facilitating passport-related services to over 1.52 crore citizens. Not returning 50 paisa to a consumer and 'rounding it off' has cost the India Post dearly, which has been directed by a consumer disputes redressal commission to refund it, in addition to providing a compensation of Rs 10,000 to him for causing mental agony, unfair trade practice and deficiency in service. Also, the Kancheepuram district consumer disputes redressal commission has asked the Department of Posts (DoP) to pay Rs 5,000 towards litigation cost. According to the complainant, A Manasha, he paid Rs 30 in cash for a registered letter at Pozhichalur post office near here on December 13, 2023, but the receipt showed only Rs 29.50. Though he offered to remit the exact amount through UPI, it was declined by postal personnel due to some technical issues. The government is looking to transform India Post into a logistics company and increase the revenue of the department by 50-60 per cent in the next 3-4 years, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Wednesday. Speaking at a Public Affairs Forum of India event in the national capital, the minister said about 25,000 villages in the country that do not have mobile networks will be connected by next year. "Postal department is moving leaps and bounds. Today, our turnover is close to about Rs 12,000 crore per annum. I'm looking at possibly trying to increase that by 50-60 per cent over the next 3-4 years," Scindia said. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday said that nearly 97.38 per cent of the Rs 2,000 bank notes have been returned to the banking system, and only about Rs 9,330 crore worth of the notes are still with the public. On May 19, the RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination bank notes from circulation. "The total value of Rs 2,000 bank notes in circulation, which amounted to Rs 3.56 lakh crore as at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 bank notes was announced, has declined to Rs 9,330 crore as at the close of business on December 29, 2023," the RBI said in a statement. Thus, 97.38 per cent of the high-value currency in circulation as of May 19, 2023, has since been returned to the banking system, it added. Tech-driven logistics platform iThink Logistics on Thursday announced a strategic collaboration with India Post to boost e-commerce deliveries across remote parts of the country. Under the collaboration, iThink Logistics will leverage the India Posts' extensive reach to enhance e-commerce last-mile delivery capabilities for D2C startups and small and mid-size businesses pan India, the company said. Department of Posts is planning to take the total number of Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras to 1,000 from the existing 700 by the end of the year, a senior official said on Monday. India Post Delhi Chief Post Master General Manju Kumari told reporters that 700 Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras have been set up across India to date, including 30 in the Delhi circle. She said, "1,000 Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras will be set up by the end of the year. We have opened 30 centres in the Delhi circle and within three months 140 customers have started using the service. We expect it to grow further." Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh unveiled a postal stamp to commemorate a decade of partnership between India Post and Amazon at the e-commerce company's Smbhav Summit 2023. Amazon introduced Sah-AI, a generative AI based personal digital assistant that leverages Amazon's experience of working with millions of sellers in India and globally to provide personalised assistance to new and existing sellers on its marketplace.
