Meghalaya Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar on Sunday said his government is working to double the state's GDP and make it a USD 10 billion economy by 2028. Addressing the Republic Day function at the Polo Grounds here, Vijayashankar said the state's GDP increased from Rs 23,235 crore to Rs 53,057 crore in nine years identifying roads, housing, water supply, power, tourism, and IT as key drivers of the growth. "The vision of our government is to make Meghalaya a 10 billion US dollar economy by 2028, by doubling our state's GDP. We are poised towards achieving this goal," the governor said. He said, "Strategies are being developed across sectors, and investments are being mobilised. The GDP of our state increased from Rs 23,235 crore in FY15 to Rs 53,057 crore in FY24. Domestic financial institution IFCI on Friday said the government has approved Rs 500 crore capital infusion in the company through the preferential issue of shares. The Department of Financial Services has conveyed sanction of the President of India to release funds of Rs 500 crore to IFCI Ltd towards subscription to the share capital during FY 2024-25, the state-owned entity said in a regulatory filing. Following this, the meeting of the board of directors of the company is called on January 29, 2025, to consider the Preferential Issue of equity shares to the central government, subject to the approval of shareholders, stock exchanges and such other regulatory authorities as may be required. With the infusion, the government's holding in the company is expected to further increase from the existing 71.72 per cent as of September 2024. The Centre on Friday assured support to Telangana to enhance the "resilience of the power grid" and ensure reliable electricity supply across the state. As per an official statement Friday, Union Minister for Power Shi Manohar Lal has assured support for nine new schemes under the Power System Development Fund with a total investment of Rs 488 crore. During a review meeting held with the Chief Minister of Telangana and state officials, the Minister emphasized the importance of the state government liquidating its legacy government department dues to be paid to DISCOMs as per the committed trajectory and for ensuring timely payment of current dues, Ministry of Power said in a statement. The procurement of goods and services through government's portal GeM rose by about 50 per cent to over Rs 4 lakh crore during April-January this fiscal due to higher buying activities by various ministries and departments, an official statement said on Friday. The Government e-Market (GeM) portal was launched on August 9, 2016, for online purchases of goods and services by all central government ministries and departments. "The GeM has surpassed last years' historic high gross merchandise value (GMV) of Rs 4 lakh crore within 10 months of the current fiscal. As of January 23, GeM has clocked a GMV of Rs 4.09 lakh crore, which marks a growth of nearly 50 per cent over the corresponding period last fiscal," the commerce and industry ministry said. The Centre has made submission of documents in support of age and reservation-related claims mandatory by candidates while applying for the civil services preliminary examinations, according to recently notified rules. Earlier, such documents were to be uploaded after candidates qualified the preliminary test. The move comes in the backdrop of the controversy involving former IAS probationer Puja Khedkar, who was accused of cheating, wrongly availing Other Backward Class (OBC) and disability quota benefits to ensure her selection in the government service. The government on Friday imposed restrictions on imports of herbicide Glufosinate priced below Rs 1,289 per kg, with a view to discourage inbound shipments of the chemical. However, if the prices are above this value, imports are allowed without any restriction. "Import of Glufosinate and its salts (purity - minimum 95 per cent) is restricted for CIF value below Rs 1,289 per kg. However, import of Glufosinate and its salts is free if CIF value is Rs 1,289 per kg and above," the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) said in a notification. CIF value (cost, insurance, and freight) is a trade term used in international commerce to determine the total value of goods being imported. Products under the restricted category need a licence from the government. The import of the herbicide stood at USD 177 million during April-November this fiscal. India has slipped one place to third slot when it comes to people's trust in the government, businesses, media and NGOs, while the low-income population is far less trusting than their richer counterparts, a study showed here on Monday. The annual Edelman Trust Barometer, now in its 25th year, released before the start of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, also showed that India ranks low at 13th place when it comes to trust of people in other countries, in companies with Indian headquarters. Canada topped this list of foreign-headquartered companies, followed by Japan, Germany, the UK, France and the US, while those ranked higher than India also included Mexico, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, China and Brazil. The overall list for trust of the general population in the government, businesses, media and NGOs was again topped by China, while Indonesia replaced India for the second spot by virtue of an increased score despite the Indian score remaining unchanged.
