Government on Thursday cautioned all endorsers and social media influencers to refrain from promoting or advertising, including surrogate advertisements, of offshore online betting and gambling platforms. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in an advisory, said that these advertisements have significant financial and socio-economic implications of online betting and gambling on consumers, particularly the youth. The ministry has further advised the online advertisement intermediaries not to target such promotional content towards Indian audiences, an official statement said. Social media intermediaries have also been advised to conduct sensitisation efforts among their users to refrain from publishing such content, it said. The advisory cautions that failure to comply with it may lead to proceedings under the provisions of Consumer Protection Act, 2019 including removal or disabling of social media posts or accounts and penal action under the applicable statutes, the ...

Encouraging the public to use various apps to putting QR codes on voter slips to locate polling booths, the Election Commission is coming out with several initiatives to increase turnout in the coming Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka leveraging technology, EC officials said on Tuesday. Voter Helpline, 'Know Your Candidate' and updating details about number of voters in queue and kind of parking facilities available at polling booths and an elaborate booth election management plan are among the other measures being taken. The EC is also collaborating with social media influencers to encourage people to cast their ballot. The government is set to announce the national creators' awards to recognise new-age influencers and creators, official sources said on Friday. They said the first-of-its-kind awards will be targeted at "Gen Z", a reference to the young generation hooked to the internet and social media, and will be given in nearly 20 categories. Social media influencers, such as those on YouTube and Instagram, will be in contention for the awards as well, the sources said. One of the categories will be for those who have helped spread the country's soft power and culture internationally, they added. Other categories may include "green champions", "swachhta ambassadors", "agro creators" and "tech creators", the sources said. They said the awards will be on the lines of the national film awards, which recognise films in different languages and categories.

It is "very difficult" to catch financial influencers as the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) expects rigorous investigation, Sebi's whole-time member Ashwani Bhatia said on Monday. Sebi orders can be challenged before the tribunal. Bhatia said the capital markets regulator has done one case of a financial influencer since coming out with the guidelines earlier this year and termed it as a "very, very big achievement". "It is very difficult to catch financial influencers. The fact that we have done one case is a very, very big achievement because the rigour of investigation that SAT expects out of us is like a proper legal matter," Bhatia said while addressing an event here. He said Sebi has to get an influencer's telephone and cellular details, which takes a lot of time, and added that they also keep changing their locations.
