The Budget 2025-26 should announce a PLI scheme for R&D to attract foreign companies and make India a global hub for innovation, said Deloitte India Partner (Direct Tax) Rohinton Sidhwa. He said the government has been pursuing a policy wherein tax holidays are less and more focus is on Production Linked Incentive (PLI) or other schemes which promote investment and employment. "We need to push India as the R&D lab of the world and if there can be such a policy which stimulates that, like PLI for R&D which includes foreign companies, that could be a game changer," Sidhwa told PTI in an interview. The Budget for 2025-26 will be presented in Parliament on February 1. Sidhwa said that one area which the government needs to look at is how to stimulate innovation and reward R&D spending and that would happen only when the country is able to attract global R&D centres into India. Announcements in the interim Budget 2024-25 with regard to deep-tech and startups will significantly help boost India's innovation-led economy, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said on Friday. Singh said the 11 per cent increase in capital expenditure (capex) to Rs 11.11 lakh crore for the next financial year, and the provision to provide Rs 75,000 crore as interest-free loan for 50 years to support reforms by states, will help further improve the country's logistics efficiency, connectivity and cut down the logistics cost. Global product engineering and digital services firm Tata Technologies has inaugurated a vehicle-software focused Innovation Centre in Tamil Nadu. The first kind of facility in Coimbatore, about 550kms from here, would focus on innovating solutions for global customers through development, testing and integration of vehicle software solutions. The company, in the first phase of operations, plans to employ 100 software professionals from the local community. Coimbatore is emerging as a key engineering hub in India with a vibrant engineering community and education ecosystem. The Asia Pacific and Japan region is emerging as a hotbed for innovation, and various governments are driving digital transformation projects, a senior AWS official has said. Initiatives like Digital India have successfully showcased how technology can be used to address citizen needs at scale, said Rahul Sharma, Managing Director, Worldwide Public Sector - APAC and Japan at Amazon Web Services (AWS). Sharma outlined a positive outlook for government-led tech spending in the region for 2024. Spending around mission projects, driven by various governments, is expected to have a bigger component of technology, he said.
