The Manipur government extended the ban on mobile data services in nine restive districts till December 9, according to an order issued by the Home Department on Saturday. The decision was taken after reviewing the prevailing law and order situation in Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl and Jiribam districts and its co-relation with internet services, the order said. Mobile internet and mobile data services, including VSATs and VPN, will remain suspended till 5.15 pm on December 9 in public interest, it added. However, exemption was granted to "cases allowed by the state government", it said. Internet services were suspended in these districts on November 16 after violence broke out in the state following the recovery of the bodies of three women and three children in the Jiri and Barak rivers. The government lifted the suspension on broadband services on November 19, considering the problems faced by healthcare facilities, .

Mobile internet services, however, remained suspended, according to an order issued by Home Commissioner N Ashok Kumar. Amid escalating violence, the administration clamped the restriction order in seven districts on November 16. "Considering the sufferings of the common people as the internet ban had affected functioning of important offices, institutions, and people who work from home, the state government has made a considered decision to lift suspension in case of broadband services conditionally, the order said. A subscriber shall not accept any connection other than the one allowed, and no Wifi or hotspots shall be allowed, it said. Telecom regulator will begin, in a month, the consultation process for deciding the terms, conditions and other modalities for administrative allocation of spectrum for satellite-based telecom services. The suspension of internet services has been extended in certain areas of some Punjab districts, including Patiala, Sangrur and Fatehgarh Sahib, till February 24 on the orders of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Earlier, the internet services were suspended from February 12 till 16 in view of the farmers' 'Delhi Chalo' march. According to the ministry's February 16 order, internet services will remain suspended in areas falling under Shambhu, Julkan, Passian, Patran, Shatrana, Samana, Ghanaur, Devigarh and Balbhera police stations in Patiala; Lalru police station in Mohali; Sangat police station in Bathinda; Killianwali police station in Muktsar; Sardulgarh and Boha police stations in Mansa; and Khanauri, Moonak, Lehra, Sunam and Chajli police stations in Sangrur; and areas under Fatehgarh Sahib police station. GTPL Hathway Ltd, provider of cable and internet services, on Thursday reported a decline of 38.04 per cent in consolidated net profit at Rs 24.67 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2023. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 39.82 crore in the October-December period a year ago, according to a regulatory filing from GTPL Hathway, a firm owned by Reliance Industries Group. However, its total revenue was up 24.1 per cent to Rs 850.87 crore in the December quarter. It was at Rs 685.63 crore in the corresponding period a year ago. During the quarter, its revenue from the Cable TV business was at Rs 660.60 crore and Rs 135.20 crore from internet services. GTPL Hathway's total income, which also includes other income, was up 22 per cent in the December quarter to Rs 860.66 crore. Shares of GTPL Hathway Ltd on Thursday closed at Rs 199 on BSE, down 3.91 per cent from the previous close.

The government has notified amendments to the Cable Television Network Rules-1994, that grant registration for multi-system operators for a 10-year period and make the process online through the Broadcast Seva Portal. The amended rules for MSO registration also enable the sharing of infrastructure by cable operators with broadband service providers to promote internet penetration to the last mile. Besides shifting the process of registration and renewal of MSOs to online mode through the Broadcast Seva Portal of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the amended rules make it clear that registration shall be granted or renewed for a period of 10 years. The processing fee of Rs 1 lakh is kept for the renewal of registration, the rules said. According to the rules, the application for registration renewal shall be made within a window of seven to two months before the expiry of the registration. A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G services, telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that many of the technology required for development of 6G are available with Indian developers and the country will lead in the next generation technology space.
