Nearly 50 female students of a government college were hospitalised for suspected food poisoning after having dinner at their hostel in Maharashtra's Latur city, officials said on Sunday. The hostel, part of the Puranmal Lahoti Government Polytechnic, has 324 female students. At around 7 pm on Saturday, the students had dinner, consisting of rice, chapattis, 'okra' curry and lentil soup, the officials said. By 8.30 pm, several of them felt nauseous and some of the students started vomiting, they said. Upon receiving the information, the college principal rushed to the spot and informed Dr Uday Mohite, dean of the Vilasrao Deshmukh Government Medical College and Hospital in Latur. The affected students were immediately taken to the hospital in ambulances. Nearly 50 students were admitted to the hospital for treatment by midnight, Dr Mohite told PTI. A bamboo plantation campaign will be launched in the rural areas of Maharashtra's Latur district on Monday to mark the birth anniversary of late BJP leader Gopinath Munde, an official said on Sunday. The campaign will be kicked off in Ramwadi (Khurd) village of Renapur tehsil by the BJP's district unit chief and MLC Ramesh Karad in the presence of farmers' leader and former MLC Pasha Patel, the official said. One lakh bamboo saplings will be planted as part of the campaign, he said.
An illicit liquor vend was busted in Maharashtra's Latur and 2,600 litres of ingredients worth Rs 1.70 lakh were destroyed, a police official said on Sunday. The raid was conducted by a team of Kasarshirshi police station on Friday and six persons have been apprehended in this connection, he added. They have been charged under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Prohibition Act, the official said.
Five persons including two women were killed after their car collided with a state transport bus in central Maharashtra's Latur district on Tuesday morning, police said. The incident took place around 8.30 am at Haibatpur village on Udgir-Nalegaon road. Six people including two women were traveling in a car to Nanded after visiting a temple at Tuljapur when the car collided with an oncoming bus of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation, said an official. The car turned turtle due to the impact, he said. The victims were rushed to a hospital in Latur where five of them were declared brought dead. Another passenger from the car was undergoing treatment, the police officer said. As per the preliminary probe, the car driver seemed to have lost control of the vehicle, he said. "We are conducting probe and a case will be registered," he added.
The Maharashtra government has sanctioned Rs 17.76 crore to repair seepage lakes in Udgir and Jalkot tehsils of Latur district, state Minister Sanjay Bansode said on Friday. Speaking to reporters here, the minister for water supply and public works said the repairs will help increase the area under irrigation. "A fund of Rs 17.76 crore has been sanctioned for repairing lakes at Udgir and Jalkot. Of this, Rs 13.35 crore will be used for repairing 39 lakes in Udgir and Rs 4.41 crore will be utilised for 23 slakes in Jalkot. The repair will increase the area under irrigation," Bansode said. The government had asked for a proposal under the Chief Minister's Water Conservation Scheme to repair damaged lakes. Accordingly, the water conservation department was instructed to survey the most dangerous lakes in Udgir and Jalkot tehsils, he said.
