On top of Europe in January. Out of the Champions League by early March. Liverpool's reward for dominating the competition's new-look league format was to run into a roadblock in the shape of Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16. Liverpool coach Arne Slot described his team as so, so, so unlucky to come up against one of the best teams in Europe after losing 4-1 in a penalty shootout at Anfield on Tuesday. That's the format we are in and we have to accept it, he said. The round-of-16 contest finished 1-1 on aggregate after Ousmane Dembele's first-half goal Tuesday cancelled out Liverpool's 1-0 win in Paris in the first leg. It is one of the quirks of the revamped Champions League that despite topping the league phase with wins against European giants Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan, Liverpool then had to face a resurgent PSG squad that had to rely on the lifeline of the playoffs to advance to this stage. We go out in a way that I think we've impressed Europe. But it
Harvey Elliott scored less than a minute after coming on as a late substitute to fire Liverpool to a stunning 1-0 win at Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. Runaway Premier League leader Liverpool had survived a barrage of attacks at Parc des Princes to keep the score at 0-0 going into the final stages on Wednesday. Elliott was sent on to replace Mohamed Salah in the 86th minute and became an unlikely hero by sweeping a low shot into the corner of the net with his first touch of the match. "To go away with a win over here was probably a bit more than we deserved," Liverpool coach Arne Slot admitted after watching goalkeeper Alisson pull off a string of saves in a match dominated by PSG. Bayern Munich took a big step toward the quarterfinals with a 3-0 win against German champion Bayer Leverkusen and 10-man Barcelona beat Benfica 1-0. Inter Milan won 2-0 at Feyenoord. Alisson to the rescue ============= PSG's players will be left wondering h
Liverpool manager Arne Slot was handed a two-match touchline suspension on Wednesday for his conduct toward match officials after the Merseyside derby against Everton. Slot admitted to a charge that he acted in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behavior towards both the match referee and an assistant referee after the 2-2 draw at Goodison Park on Feb. 12, the Football Association said. The FA said Slot has also been charged 70,000 pounds ($90,000). Slot was shown a red card for his post-match conduct and has since said he regretted his actions. Liverpool's next two domestic games are against Newcastle on Wednesday and Southampton on March 8, both in the Premier League and at Anfield. Liverpool leads the league by 11 points.
Goodison Park, one of English soccer's most venerable and atmospheric stadiums, is preparing to host a Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool later Wednesday for the 120th and final time with eternal bragging rights at stake. The "Grand Old Lady" as it is fondly called by the locals has been Everton's home since 1892 but will be demolished after this season, with the club moving to a new 52,888-capacity venue at Bramley-Moore Dock on Liverpool's waterfront. For that reason, it is set to be an emotional night, and there's plenty at stake for two neighboring teams whose home grounds are for now, at least less than 1 kilometer apart and famously separated by Stanley Park. Liverpool is seeking a victory to move nine points clear of second-placed Arsenal in the Premier League. Everton is looking to push further clear of the relegation zone under new manager David Moyes, who has won three of his four league games since taking over last month for a second spell in charge. As f
Premier League leader Liverpool was knocked out of the FA Cup by second-tier struggler Plymouth after losing 1-0 in a stunning fourth-round upset on Sunday. It ended any hopes of a quadruple of major trophies for Liverpool, which leads the Premier League by six points with a game in hand, finished top of the revamped first stage of the Champions League and has reached the English League Cup final. Ryan Hardie's 53rd-minute penalty proved to be the winner for Plymouth, a club from the southwest of England which is in last place in the second-tier Championship and recently fired Wayne Rooney as its manager. Liverpool fielded a heavily rotated lineup, without stars like Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk who weren't even on the bench, but still had established internationals like Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota on the field in a frenetic ending to the game as Plymouth was forced to defend doggedly. At the end of a nerve-shredding nine minutes of stoppage time, Plymou
Liverpool will play Newcastle in the English League Cup final after routing Tottenham 4-0 on Thursday. A rampant performance overturned Spurs' 1-0 lead from the first leg of the semifinal and sealed a 4-1 aggregate victory that keeps Arne Slot's team in contention for an unprecedented quadruple of trophies in his first season in charge. We are in one final, but we have a lot to play for still, said Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, who opened the scoring in the first half at Anfield. "We have to stay calm and focus to reach as much as possible. Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk all struck after the break in a one-sided semifinal second leg. Liverpool will play Newcastle in the final at Wembley Stadium on March 16 for the chance to retain the trophy it won last year. It could be just the first title in what is shaping up to be a special debut season for Slot after succeeding Jurgen Klopp last year. His team is top of the Premier League, into the round of 16 in the
Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss the second leg against Tottenham in the English League Cup semifinals on Thursday because of an injury sustained at the weekend. Liverpool trails Tottenham 1-0 from the first leg on Jan. 8. The return match is at Anfield, with Liverpool looking to retain its trophy. Alexander-Arnold came off in the 70th minute of the 2-0 win at Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday because of a suspected thigh injury. He is going to miss the game tomorrow," Liverpool manager Arne Slot said Wednesday, and we have to see if he is able to play on Sunday. Liverpool plays Plymouth in the FA Cup on Sunday before a Merseyside derby at Everton in the Premier League next Wednesday. Asked for more details about Alexander-Arnold's injury, Slot said: I think you saw that he left the pitch with a bit of pain in his leg, so that's why he misses the game tomorrow. But he is already on the pitch, not with the team but with the rehab coach, so let's se
Liverpool will give some star players including Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk a rest for the Champions League game at PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday. The Reds have already advanced to the round of 16, so manager Arne Slot opted to take a second-string squad to the Netherlands. Along with Salah and Van Dijk, the other players who were left in Merseyside were Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Ibrahima Konate, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Diaz. Liverpool is in first place and can finish no lower than second in the league phase of the Champions League. On Tuesday, Slot said with the packed schedule it was a chance for players to get some freshness back. The Premier League leaders play at seventh-place Bournemouth on Saturday.
Lucas Bergvall's first goal for Tottenham secured a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the English League Cup semifinals on Wednesday in a first-leg match notable for a serious-looking injury to Rodrigo Bentancur and the first in-stadium announcement by a referee in the English game. The 18-year-old Bergvall slotted home the winner in the 86th minute following a pass from Dominic Solanke, who thought 10 minutes earlier that he had given Tottenham the lead. That goal was ruled out after a VAR check for offside and referee Stuart Attwell communicated the decision via a wireless microphone to spectators inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and to TV viewers. In the sixth minute, Bentancur the Uruguay midfielder who plays for Tottenham fell to the ground and lay prone after landing awkwardly when attempting a header from a corner. He was carried off on a stretcher, to applause from around the ground, after receiving treatment during a 10-minute delay and Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed
