Hundreds of people on Sunday took part in a mini marathon organised by Army's Bhimber Gali brigade in Mendhar sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, an official said. The first ever mini-marathon in the border subdivision ahead of the mega Mendhar sports festival was undertaken under operation 'Sadbhavana' (goodwill) to foster unity and social cohesion besides strengthening civil-military relation, he said. The army official said the event witnessed an overwhelming participation of local populace and drew 400 participants from school and colleges of the Mendhar region, demonstrating their zeal and enthusiasm. He said the Marathon featured two competitive age categories -- 15 to 30 years and 31 to 45 years. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who ran a half marathon on Sunday, expressed hope that the Kashmir Marathon would become one of the top athletic events in the world in the coming years. "I am thankful to the people of Srinagar for the way they came out to encourage the runners. Two participants, including a 74-year-old man, collapsed and died during the annual TATA Mumbai Marathon, which was held here on Sunday, a police official said. According to the police official, 22 persons who took part in the running event were hospitalised for dehydration and other reasons. The deceased participants were identified as Suvradeep Banerjee (40) from Kolkata and Rajendra Bora (74) from Mumbai. Banerjee, a seasoned full marathoner and software engineer, collapsed near the Haji Ali Junction, while Bora slumped to the road near a petrol pump close to a popular pizza joint opposite Marine Drive, the official added.

India's first "frozen-lake marathon" at Ladakh's Pangong Tso at a height of 13,862 feet will be held on February 20 and the army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) have been roped in to implement a "proper action plan" for the event, a senior government official said on Sunday.
